Lack of good storyline.
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
Virus is a Swiss boy who is a piano prodigy and genius. All Vitus wants is to be normal. His parents have high expectations when they learn of their son's genius. His parents put enormous pressures on him to succeed as a piano prodigy and a genius student attending college at 12 years old. When an accident happens, Vitus is no longer a genius but an average healthy normal 12year old boy who enjoys spending time with his grandfather. That's what we're supposed to think but Vitus wants to be like other 12 year olds. Vitus is a rare film where everybody can relate to these characters especially the family dynamics. I don't know where the setting in Switzerland whether Geneva, Zurich, or Bern. This is probably my first Swiss film. I don't recall any others.
Perhaps you heard about geniuses before and imagined the typical stereotype of a "genius", like probably Einstein, Newton or some smart dude of our times. But whatever you might have had in mind, Vitus will make you think how cool is to be in charge of your intelligence and skills. No matter what your age is, no matter how super smart you are, you still can be cool without losing your touch. I love Vitus and Bruno Ganz makes also a terrific role and a couple of key scenes with him are just amazing. I specially like the fact about this movie that once you realize you are different and you try to hide it, still your own scent will come up sudden, unexpectedly. That makes you unique and should encourage you to direct what you want to achieve in life taking advantage of your own resources. Vitus shows you it's fine to have no clue about what to do. The question is, do you really don't know what to do? Not sure how many Vitus are in the world anyways but definitely this movie is one of my favorites to be re-watched.
it is said that 6 year old Vitus actually plays... Well - he does not in the dancing scene with the "babyseatter". It is actually embarrassing to watch the poor kind playing clown as told by the director. There are many more things which no director yet mastered to show properly.. it is to do with the "feel" of timing. That is obvious when Vitus finds out the padlock (at air port) locked... But hey....the director must make sure that the kid pulls this padlock few times with the camera closed up on the padlock so the "slowest" from the audience actually "gets it" that the the padlock is locked. Minus 15 points for the director on this. The kid plays piano "life" and this can not be denied.. Something not too often offered to watch in movies. Here is my 7 points justification. But - as a 12 years old - he tackles very difficult piece by Franz List only to practice (much later in the movie) a very basic, the very beginners drill by Carl Cherny...Worse of all... Mother claims not to be a pianist but she is giving a lesson to already then well fledged pianist. That is something i could not stop laughing at. Vitus at 6 years old is pathetic as he should be expected to be at that age. However the 12 years old Vitus does a good job. I did not see too clearly that he "wants to be normal" any other way than by his own brief comment about it:-). Although nothing new in the movie from what had already been shown in thousands of other movies - this movie is not a markedly "oversweetened" work and the true play of a child is something very refreshing to watch after all those "circus clown like" kids from Hollywood in most other movies about "genious" kids. To sum up: First part of Vitus at 6 is way below any value. Second part of Vitus 12 repairs the damage to the point that the movie is well worth watching...(once).
Everything is "German-perfect" in this film. However do not equal this comment to "coldness" or "steel-like perfect". Profound emotions are conveyed all along through it. I am a professional pianist/ composer/arranger/ orchestra Director myself, and yes, for musicians it is immediately evident the 12-yr old kid is ACTUALLY playing. Furthermore, he plays with emotion, virtuosity, sense of humor and wit!. The grandfather is played by great German actor Bruno Gantz (who indeed played one of the most realistic portrayals of Hitler I have seen, in "The Fall" - Last Days of Hitler -"..or something like that). The original music is just wonderful, not to mention the rendering of works by the classical music masters!. The casting is perfect, and the story/script simply gets unbeatable due to the writer's avoiding the focus ONLY on the kid's musical virtuosity, but due to his high IQ he mixed in Internet (IT), wall street issues, business, parents-son relationships, grandfather-grandson relationships. I am the father of three (boy 30, boy 24 and girl 18) and also had a close relation with my grandfathers. Everyone is simply perfect. Don't miss it!.
