It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

You don't sit down to a film called "Death Spa" and expect artfully crafted horror filled with terror, suspense, tension and deep characters and creative death sequences. No, you expect cheese and this film gives it to you! "Death Spa" is terribly made and is filled with bad acting, atrocious editing, a story that pretty much makes no logical sense and terrible practical effects and death sequences. But all the bad things this film throws at you mixes together to create something magically entertaining. Yes, this film is one of those "it's so bad its good" ordeals and it is the perfect feature to gather with friends and riff the night away. And the best part is this film is so terribly made that you don't even have to make fun of it to laugh. It's pretty much an accidental comedy and that's why it is so fun to watch.

(Credit IMDb) Michael's health club is besieged with a series of terrible murders involving killer saunas and other grisly devices. Michael's wife killed herself a while before and her brother holds Michael responsible. Michael needs to stop the bloodshed before he loses all of his clients. I loved this movie. It's horrendously bad, but incredibly enjoyable. The 80's were the golden age when it comes to horror movies. There were so many delightfully cheesy horror movies coming out all the time. This movie is eerily similar to another "Gym" related slasher, called Killer Workout. I enjoyed that one as well, but this one is much better. You get what you expect when it comes to this stuff. Hot women in aerobics gear, nonsensical plotting, stupid characters, amateurish acting, cheesy 80's music; this movie has a little bit of everything, possession, exorcism, slashing, and dream sequences. We also get some amazing nudity. The shower sequence is unforgettable. It even throws in flying bathroom tiles right after the shower scene. Brenda Bakke is the typical "clueless" blonde heroine. Shari Shattruck is wonderfully delicious and OTT as the bewitched Catherine. Horror favorite Ken Foree (Dawn of The Dead) also has a bit part as a gym caretaker. The gore is very creative. Someone's head explodes by shattering glass, a hand is mangled in a blender, we get a nasty death involving weights, a face is boiled in graphic detail, a spike is impaled in someone's neck, and more. This one is heavy on the red sauce. My only real complaint about this movie is that everybody acts so complacent when they learn Catherine is at large. A dead woman is causing havoc, why are you acting like it's an everyday thing? That sort of thing is to be expected from a low budget horror film like this one, but that did bug me a bit. Overall, if you love cheesy movies like I do, this one will be right up your alley. It's highly entertaining, especially if invite a few friends over. If you can find it, it's worth it7/10

It's no secret that one of my favorite movies of all time is David A. Prior's 1986 classic KILLER WORKOUT. Given that, imagine my joy when I discovered there was another workout slasher made in the eighties. I somehow knew it wouldn't top KILLER WORKOUT, but it's near impossible to not enjoy DEATH SPA.Michael is the owner of a prestigious spa that's run completely by a large computer system built by his ex-brother-in-law David. You see, Michael's wife, Catherine, had a miscarriage, which severely damaged her spine and committed her to a wheelchair. Depressed, she doused herself in gasoline and set herself on fire. Well, now someone, or something, is killing off members of the spa. Is it Catherine, back from the dead? Or is it David, out to avenge his sister? Or is it someone else trying to get Michael to lose the spa? DEATH SPA is great, but for all the wrong reasons. I imagine this movie had a budget twice that of KILLER WORKOUT, yet the quality is still the same, and maybe even worse. This is definitely a movie made solely to show off some fancy gore FX, so the writing is very sloppy and very funny. Sometimes the hilarity is the result of just bad acting, but sometimes, you can't help but wonder if they actually could have done better, given the material. This is sad, considering some of the actors have done bigger things. There's Ken Foree (DAWN OF THE DEAD), Merrit Butrick (STAR TREK 2&3), Brenda Bakke (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL), and Frank McCarthy (THE RELIC).DEATH SPA definitely doesn't skimp on the gore, with inventive deaths, a huge body count, and lots and lots of grue. One guy's face falls off, another gets boiled alive by hot water, another explodes, etc. The effects aren't the greatest, but did you really expect them to be? I will say that DEATH SPA beats out KILLER WORKOUT in the death and gore department, but then again, there aren't any deaths by giant safety pin in DEATH SPA, are there? That's really all there is to talk about with DEATH SPA. It's not scary in the slightest, the gore is great, some of the kills are so absurd they're hilarious (death by fish, anyone?), the writing is beyond awful, and it is sort of sad to see these stars appearing in, well, THIS.Needless to say, it's required viewing for every organism on Earth.

In Death Spa's title sequence, director Michael Fischa guides his camera slowly towards the entrance of the Star Body Health Spa as an electrical storm rages on the horizon; suddenly, lightning strikes the building, knocking out some of the letters on its neon sign to reveal the title of the film. The camera then continues to glide through the doorway, as the spa's staff prepare to leave for the night; lights are switched off one-by-one, and the foyer is slowly plunged into darkness...It's a promising start and one which proves that director Michael Fischa has a keen visual sense, which makes it all the more disappointing when the film quickly slips into mundane murder/mystery mode and threatens to stay there for the rest of its running time. The film's plot sees a series of suspicious 'accidents' occurring at the high-tech, computer-controlled spa owned by widower Michael Evans (William Bumiller), whose wife Catherine (Shari Shattuck) committed suicide following the death of their child. Could Catherine's embittered brother David (Merritt Butrick), creator of the spa's advanced computer system, be behind the bizarre mishaps? Does anyone else have reason to see Michael's business fail? Or are the accidents the work of a malevolent supernatural force?Thankfully, despite this rather cheesy 'whodunnit'-style narrative, which sees a pair of useless cops assisting Michael in solving the mystery, Fischa manages to keep things interesting through the inclusion of plenty of nudity (the spa is a haven for busty babes and hard-bodied hotties), a few enjoyably crap 80s Flashdance-inspired aerobics scenes, some inventive deaths, and a bit of fun hokum involving a parapsychologist. And then, as the film enters its final act, everything goes completely nuts...It is revealed that David has been possessed by the spirit of his sister Catherine, who wants Michael to die so that they can be together in the afterlife. At a Mardi Gras party, being held at the spa, the possessed David kidnaps Michael's squeeze Laura (Brenda Bakke) and tries to kill her by frying her under a sunbed. Meanwhile, lots of other people die in a variety of entertaining and bloody ways: wood panelling from a sauna room shoots through one guy's head, spilling his brains everywhere; a girl has her arm removed by a food blender; the policeman has his throat torn open by a frozen fish (I kid you not!); and an exploding mirror leaves one poor woman a mess of bloody pieces scattered all over the floor! This totally unpredictable and gory ending is loads of fun, and it's well worth suffering through Death Spa's more tedious moments in order to fully savour the complete and utter madness of the film's final moments.
