That was an excellent one.
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
I'm not really the best person to be voicing an opinion on this film. I bought it as a birthday present for my wife, who is both a dance fan and a Patrick Swayze fan, and she was, I think, pleased. She found it interesting, and very much liked the fact that it contained a lot of dancing, and it was dancing that you could actually watch. Also, the dancing was ballet-style modern dancing, and that's also a style she liked. So, on that level, it has to be marked a success.Me, I'm going to call it "The Patrick Swayze Dancing and Loud Shouting Movie." It seemed to comprise two elements - dancing (where, as noted, I'm not the best person to voice judgement as I don't normally care much for dancing, and this was no exception) and a soapy kind of plot to hang the dancing on where, I feel, I am entitled to voice my thoughts.I didn't think much of it. There was obviously something which had gone on at some point in the past between Swayze's and Niemi's characters, but it was kept a mystery until very late, and neither of them was able or prepared to actually communicate with the other about what was wrong (in much the same way as Peter Parker and Mary Jane in Spider-Man 3 where, come to think of it, there was also some dancing I didn't care for). So this bit of the movie annoyed me intensely - I just wanted to slap both of them. So, all in all, a successful birthday present for herself, but not a successful viewing for myself.
I am a novice dancer but this film left me speechless. It was awesome to watch the dancing and for me to think that both Lisa and Patrick were in their early 50's when this was shot, is amazing to me. They were beautiful in the dancing as were the other dancers. What inspired me to return to dancing was the scene with the seniors doing ballet. It showed to a non dancer that it is never to late to follow your heart and maybe take up a dream you had as a youngster. Choreography was great, I enjoyed watching to process and dedication required to get the show done. This film touches the soul, if not then no film can. The story is good but the dancing is awesome. Its a shame that the film did not get picked up my a major studio I think they really lost out. Great job , well worth buying this movie.
This could have been a great movie about dancers growing old, or older. Both Swayze and De La Pena were wonderful dancers in their prime but to be only 7 years away from professional dancing as stated in this film is frankly, a bit ridiculous when it is obviously many more years than that - more like 20. There is certainly a lot of pain in a dancer's life from growing older and no longer being capable of dancing the way you once could. There are some very accurate statements made in the film relating to this. The choreography is somewhat boring. Just a lot of lyrical steps, well executed by the young dancers, but lacking any meaning. Just meaningless steps on one level, saying nothing.
After viewing most the film One Last Dance, many psychological comparisons were evident. Not only did this movie portray beautiful dancing and a deep message, there were connections that were closely related psychological processes. The correlations included the ego, characters experiencing self doubt, mid life crisis', and injury.A specific dance sequence in this film that contained all the psychological aspects was in the beginning of the film. When the main character is dancing in the dark dance studio room and he is haunted by various images of experiences he went through. He first starts out moving gracefully to the music running through all the moves in his mind as a dead tree branch lies across the floor. This to me represents the trio's choreographer who passed away before the show was ever performed. The room s also especially dark which expresses to me the emotion being portrayed as morbid because of the death. Sheets are also shown blowing in the wind which suggests being the presence of a spirit or ghost haunting him as he recalls the strict demeanor and suffering the dancers went through under his direction. A final example I recall from the film is when he falls during this scene. To me that represented when the women I the trio fell, and also implied to difficulty and previous failure of the project. After seeing most of this movie, it was really amazing to me the numerous psychological associations it contained. Not only was it a beautiful dance story, there was deeper underlying meaning to it. This film wasn't just a typical dance movie that was uplifting and jovial, but instead demonstrated real life struggles and perseverance.
