Excellent but underrated film
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
I really have no interest in these types of movies or really any American movies in general to be honest but this movie was not too bad. It was fast paced and easy to follow once you're 20 or so minutes in. Also there were some suspenseful moments during the movie and also parts that made you realize why this movie is rated R.
"Gangs of New York" is set in 1863 and follows the story of Amsterdam Vallon who returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher, his father's killer from 16 years earlier.Set in a time of the Civil War the division within five points and NYC is reflective of the division in America at the time. As Amsterdam fights to avenge his father's death he faces several challenges. However his does eventually avenge his father's death. At the end of the movie it is evident that though they were fighting one another, at the end of the day they were all Americans as most of them died not by the hand of the other group but die as casualties of war.The actors do a good job of moving the slow plot forward. This was done through complex character development throughout the movie. As the characters develop relationships with one anther the actors use that to move the plot forward. The acting was very complex and detailed. Throughout the movie there were several scenes that were not completely relevant to the overall plot of the movie. Thoses scenes could have been cut out to shorten the movie and move the plot along quicker. The visual effects though at the beginning were not well done, do improve throughout the movie. The movie as a whole was very well shot and they did a very good job recreating NYC in that era. It was intriguing how they showed the changes NYC had gone through since that time. Overall, the movie though excellent and representative of that time, it had several points which made the movie less interesting. Therefore, I would rate this movie at 7 stars.
The start was slow, and the plot seemed to jump around and was hard to follow at times. Often, it threw us into situations without any reason as to why they were there. Some situations were also unnecessary to the plot of the movie. Those are the problems I had, but I appreciated the main character's motive and how he developed his relation with the man who killed his father. The overall character development was thorough as well, and the historical setting as a motive to some actions also fit cohesively. I enjoyed watching this movie, except for a few parts
¨Gangs of New York¨ shows a time in U.S. history where the divide within NYC mirrored the divide in the country. The plot was good, but was hard to follow. The high quantity of characters made it them hard to follow. There was also little lead up to some events as the viewer was put into situations with little introduction to the certain situations. Certain scenes were unnecessary the the plot and did not help move the plot forward in any way, Some scenes were also unrealistic and the visual effects became better throughout the movie.Though some points in the plot were unneeded the actors did a fantastic job of moving the plot forward and keeping the very long and complex movie interesting.
