Wonderful Movie
Best movie of this year hands down!
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles. Collateral is probably one of the hardest roles and films that Tom Cruise chose to do and he really did a great job but the same goes for Jamie Foxx who was just as good as he was plus the film was directed by a very good director Michael Mann and his cinematography totally shows up in various scenes. Collateral is fast paced, intense and just thrilling and another win for Tom Cruise as an actor. (10/10)
Max, a good-hearted Los Angeles cabbie with dreams but not much resolve, takes a man named Vincent as his client for one night, and has the most unusual and dangerous night of his life...Collateral is a slick and compact film that masquerades as a crime drama/action film when it is really about its two main characters and the things they represent. Max and Vincent, played to perfection by Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise, are main characters, opponents and complementary opposites all at the same time. The film makes the unusual but effective decision of having the two opponents in the same spot for most of the film (inside Max's taxi), and this closeness prepares the ground for the exchanges between Max and Vincent, both actually noticing their problems this way and teaching each other (however, only one of them really learns). Despite its great atmosphere and impressive shootout scenes, Collateral is really about bad choices and missed chances. It's the story of two people with very different lives and morals who are dissatisfied deep down with what their choices resulted for them, and are looking for a way out whether under the guise of avoidance or adaptation. It is a great film and never becomes less interesting on repeated viewings.
I definitely enjoyed this movie. It keeps you on the edge and doesn't make you want to stop watching. It's one problem is that it doesn't make sense. Besides the fact that hitman Vincent takes the same cab his last victim just took there is also the fact that Vincent seems to do everything that will make it hard for him to keep it low and stay anonymous. What hitman would kill a guy right in front of the cab driver? And then go riding with the same driver to the other murder destinations? One would think he would go, do his job, return to the cab quietly without making Max suspicious. Then get out and take another driver getting lost in this huge city. I can tell myself that this is because Vincent is an overconfident sociopath but he does it for a living, he should know better.Still, I can overlook this problem since otherwise the movie is really good. It is filmed in a pretty stylish way. I keeps one exciting. It has some amazing and creative scenes and ideas. And the acting is top level. I loved Tom Cruise as a villain. It is different from his typical role and he was great at it. Jamie Foxx was also showing us his amazing talent. The dynamic between the characters is great. Vincent has this cruel power that we can see Max is feeling. He is a villain that is different from the ones we know and while we never really get to know who he is he seems to have many character levels. Max on the other hand shows us how he feels under the pressure of this extraordinary client. Him not knowing what to do in this situation and how it leads to the actions towards the end of the movie.Really good job, I am sure glad I chose this movie to watch today. One of the better thrillers I have seen lately.
As the movie begins we're introduced to Jamie Foxx - a taxi driver residing in a bustling Los Angeles. We relate to Jamie Foxx's character Max, he's just an everyday American keeping his nose out of trouble with a 9 to 5 job, a jerk of a boss and aspirations that he still has dreams of but ultimately take a backseat when real life comes knocking. Cruise is introduced as a professional, calculated hit-man and as soon as he is introduced into the story we take a turn into a high stakes, thrilling plot that follows Tom Cruise - playing Vincent and Max through the mesmerizing Los Angeles setting as Vincent forces Max to escort him to his next handful of hits.Eventually, Mark Ruffalo is welcomed into the story as Detective Fanning, which works exquisitely as a supporting character as he portrays a wise, level headed detective who drives the story forward with smart, intuitive actions and believable, and compelling character motivations.Overall, Collateral works as a riveting, action thriller and there is very little negative things to say about the story as a whole. Tom Cruise playing a villain for once is a breath of fresh air and his chemistry with Jamie Foxx is magnetic throughout every viewing. Definitely check this one out.
