All that we are seeing on the screen is happening with real people, real action sequences in the background, forcing the eye to watch as if we were there.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

I think this film is easily one of the absolute best Disney films of the early 2000s. I was pleasantly stunned after watching this film. The reason for that is because I did not think this film would have been as good as it is, reading the reviews and seeing the scores on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. But to my surprise, this film was amazing. Its beautiful, yet simple animation, great soundtrack, great characters, good story, and great message makes this film easily one to remember and re-watch here and there for years to come. Now, granted, there are other Disney films that are better than this, but this film is a great example of what Disney does best. While the soundtrack was great, I feel like there were a few parts where the soundtrack was somewhat off-putting in a scene or 2. Another thing is that while, yes, the story was a bit predictable, I honestly love the way it was set up. I thought the writing done in this film was very well put together, even if it is predictable some times. When it comes to flaws, that's about it. I'm completely shocked that this film has gotten the amount of negative reviews it got. I recommend this film to anyone who loves bears and/or is interested in the American Indian culture, as this film delves into both of those realms perfectly. I also recommend this film to anyone who hasn't seen it, as this film is, in my opinion, one of the best Disney films of the early 2000s. This film may not be the absolute best Disney film (then again, almost every film after The Lion King hasn't been as good as their previous films either), this film is amazing for what it is and I believe a lot of people who haven't seen it yet would enjoy it, just like me.

Brother Bear: A lesson filled unoriginal Brother Bear is a movie that will tickle the young mind with bright colors, funny characters, and a semi interesting storyline. However, the seemingly original Disney movie made moves that well, are not so original. As you get deeper into the movie the plot begins to seem very familiar, and although the kids love to watch movies like this one, it may be time for Disney to be a little more creative in how they make their money. In this movie expect to see a very predictable plot, with life lessons worth teaching your kids. The feeling you get when you're introduced to the characters is a mix of excitement and intrigue. You start off listening to an elderly man telling a tale of what turns out to be his own life. He goes on to say,"The greatest change I ever witnessed was that of my brother, a boy, desperately trying to be a man." With a dramatic scene change you meet three brothers who are lurking through the forest trying to get food for their tribe they, like normal brothers, are teasing and messing around with each other. Then the scene cuts to a boy being chased down by a herd of deer. With a narrow escape the three brothers come up laughing and you finally meet the main characters of an unoriginal Disney movie.Disney has had many great movies, many iconic movies that almost everyone has seen, but that is the problem. Too many people have seen the multiple movies that begin with young stubborn kids that need to prove something or accomplish something in order to show their worth. And even from the very beginning of Brother Bear they hint at a movie plot just like that. if you like the general I need to find myself, prove my worth, and overcome challenges kind of movie then this is the movie for you. Meeting the all the many characters in the movie can usually be a fun and enjoyful ride, and in many cases it is. In Brother Bear on the other hand very few of the characters take long to actually know who they are. The character development is very fast mainly because the characters are more ideas than anything. Kenai for example is the idea of change. Throughout the whole movie he is changing and growing as a man. The three brothers all have very different personalities, but the younger and main character in the movie is the stubborn kid who has to overcome challenges in order to learn and grow. Yes there are the cookie cutter types of characters, but there are two characters who will really freshen up the movie. Rutt and Tuk, two Canadian moose, who have great personalities and give a good change to the movie. They basically allow the adults to suffer through yet another cliché Disney movie. As I said before this is a movie that you have seen a million times before. The story begins with a stubborn child trying to prove himself to the seemingly perfect oldest brother. And as the story presses on you begin to piece together what will happen at the end. This is a great movie for the young kids that's brains and personalities are still like sponges. They will learn to love everyone and respect others. Disney does a great job at teaching life lessons in movies, but it's clouded by repetitive humor and over the top shenanigans performed by the characters. However for most adults they will see a different take on the movie. At parts you realize that maybe this isn't a story between man and beast, but man and man. And how we treat other races. All though kids won't recognize the social aspect of the movie Disney still did a great job at sending the message subliminally to these young kids. Change is very important in the world and maybe we can achieve change through movies like these. So as we can see the movie though cliché in nature, cookie cutter characters and an unoriginal plot there are still some positive points to it. It does teach good lessons to the kids and adults, but isn't exactly the Oscar award winning movie that others can claim. for a movie that you watch over and over again I wouldn't recommend but at least see it once. Disney movies seemed to draw kids in so hopefully you can at least teach them some positive things in life in and easier way than sitting them down and talking to them.

Brother Bear (2003): Dir: Aaron Blaise, Robert Walker / Voices: Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Suarez, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, D.B. Sweeney: Entertaining animation about man's relationship with nature. Three brothers catch fish for their tribe. It is custom that when they get older they receive necklaces carved in the likeness of animals to symbolize a particular strength. Older brother is eagle of guidance. Middle brother is wolf of wisdom. The youngest is bear of love. This comes as a disappointment due to ridicule. An encounter with a bear renders the death of an older brother who gives his life by causing a glacier to collapse. The bear survives and the younger brother seeks revenge. Upon slaying the bear the great spirits transforms him into a bear and is companioned with a bear cub. Directors Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker are aided by glorious images but the screenplay is far from glorious. Joaquin Phoenix voices the transformed victim but such an act comes off as contrived with a predicted resolution. Jeremy Suarez voices the cub whose mother is killed and he forms a friendship with her killer. D.B. Sweeney voices the resourceful older brother. Strange Brew duo Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas voice two moose in the comic likenesses of themselves. Themes of independence and friendship marred by new age elements and a debatable ending. Score: 7 / 10

I'd like to start off by saying my favorite Disney movie is The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). Not saying it was the best, but it's a movie that appealed to my interests in a lot of ways. Also, it's one of Disney's more different films and took a lot of risks to adapt the original story in a respectful and unique way. The Disney Renaissance and even the 2D films from the early 2000s will always remain a significant aspect of my childhood. That said, Brother Bear is one of the few Disney films that I actually didn't see as a kid. I remember seeing the advertisements for it and thinking it look all right. I didn't think it looked bad, I just never got around to seeing the whole movie.(Just to note, I was born in 1993. So you can imagine my disappointment when I found out there was no 2D Disney film from 1993. So Brother Bear was released in 2003, and I'm glad there was at least one Disney film released in a '3 year in recent years.) So I decided, since it's now 2013, I would finally watch Brother Bear for it's 10 year anniversary, and for the first 24 minutes or so, it was like something I had never seen from Disney before! It centered around this Inuit tribe who's culture was so fascinating and these three brothers who were very likable and relatable characters. The movie wasn't bogged down by having to appeal to kids with awkward comic relief. It was a genuinely good story that was equally as much a kids film as it was an adult film. The tundra imagery and landscapes were gorgeous, the animation was top notch, the lighting was magnificent, absolutely everything was just perfect! Honestly, if after the point when Kenai becomes a bear, the movie were consistent with the first third, this would have easily been my favorite Disney movie of all time! Now, I saw the Nostalgia Critic's Disneycember review, so I knew the rest of the movie wouldn't be as good. It wasn't, but I think it's not as bad as he makes it. I think some parts are really good, but what really brings it down is the fact that the movie thinks it needs to appeal to the kids in a modern way. So all of the animals talk like modern people, and it just comes off as lame and jarring where the people in the early scenes talked in a more timeless way. Not to mention it does end up having awkward comic relief.I was wondering what I would do to make the second and third acts consistent and just as good, and I thought of something.First, since the Inuit culture was one of the best things about the first act and we won't see the tribe until the very end, I would make the animals' culture just as interesting. The Inuits have their culture, and the animals have their own which actually is similar in a lot of ways as Kenai would discover.Second, both Kenai and Denahi would BOTH be the main characters. This would just as much be just as much Denahi's journey as it is Kenai's. Basically both characters would share about the same amount of screen-time and we would see more of Denahi's survival tactics as opposed to just seeing him when he is attacking Kenai as a bear (which, by the way, are actually some of my favorite scenes, the set up is brilliant). We could even see him doing some other things like meeting the sister tribe to restock on supplies and health so we don't abandon the Inuits altogether.Third, get rid of all that modern crap. The story is supposed to be in the style of an old folktale with a hint of Shakespearean style drama. A story that can appeal to anyone on an emotional level. Since this was Disney's last real effort in hand-drawn animation, I think they should have really gone all out and made something unique since it was an almost certain guarantee that the movie wasn't going to do that well at the box office. All in all, I think this movie is just good, and could have been amazing. But for what it is, I would definitely watch it again. The ending was was at least really good. Personally, I would have had Kenai stay a human and have a bittersweet ending for him and Koda, but I still like this ending okay.At least Disney ended their animation with something even slightly spectacular. Until then, I'm just waiting until the do bring back their animation and do something incredible with it.
