Good concept, poorly executed.
Fantastic!
The acting in this movie is really good.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
A bored married couple is surprised to learn that they are both assassins hired by competing agencies to kill each other. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is funny and quite action packed spy, assassin spoof that anyone could really enjoy. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had a terrific chemistry together and it makes sense that a while later they got married, Vince Vaughn was also pretty good and mostly a bit of the comedic relief. The cinematography was pretty great especially the big shootout in the end and how the camera was rolling was truly terrific. Definitely a great flick. (10/10)
Romantic comedies usually not please everyone, much less when disguised as action films like this. The basic idea of this film is a fight between husband and wife, secret agents of rival agencies have to kill each other. The idea is excellent for a film of this genre, but Simon Kinberg's script was not able to develop in a natural and effective way. The result is a rather scrappy movie where every scene look like a sort of "excuse" to justify the action scenes, quite hilarious, between the couple. The couple is played by Bradd Pitt and Angelina Jolie. About them can be said that they knew not disappoint the audience and were at the height of the characters and the film. They are two extremely talented actors who combine talent to physical beauty, and scenes where both participate, interacting with each other, in a more or less friendly but always passionate way, are worthy of anthology, not only because they can combine and comedy and action but also by showing excellent meshing with one another. The special visual and sound effects are basically the standard of Hollywood, not the least bit surprised the public. Guns, shooting everywhere, explosions, martial arts, car chases ... in a way, the film looks like a parody of action films, exhibiting comically most of its cliche's. If that was the intention, it is excellent. Moreover, the film is basically pure entertainment, without great concern for anything else other than the right mix of action and comedy.
Back when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were getting more attention than any couple since Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton it seemed serendipitous that Mr.&Mrs. Smith arrived as a film vehicle to take advantage of all that publicity. It certainly features the sex appeal of both. With a lot of violence thrown in as well. In fact the violence is positively erotic at times.Pitt and Jolie are a pair of hit people who work for different arms of the federal government and if you can believe it have no idea what the other does. They get assigned from their agencies to the same case, but one to protect, the other to destroy a target played by Adam Brody. After that they learn of each other and try to kill each other.Even before Jolie was raiding tombs as Lara Croft she certainly had the fighting skills and spirit. Looking at the two of them I really got the impression they were having some great fun together. That fact really permeates your experience watching Mr.&Mrs. Smith.Just beware lest you think that this is remake of the Alfred Hitchcock film Mr.&Mrs. Smith. That it's not, but these Smiths are enjoyable enough as is.
Gotta say, a lot of the reviews here are complaining about how ludicrous or unbelievable it is... but I think they may be missing the point. The plot is comedy. They are assassins, but married with no idea about the other's secret lives. And their marriage is failing. So, when they're booked in to kill each other, it's easier for them to take the job on.Perhaps, it turns out, that part of the reason their marriage is failing is because it was built on lies... which they reveal to each other over time as they become closer. The shooting, the ridiculous ability to fend off hundreds of people booked in to kill them is just comedy. It's not even close to realistic. But it's not about that. It's about their relationship in a ridiculous setting.Like Grosse Point Blank turned up to 111. It's stupid. It's meant to be. It's a ridiculous situation as the canvas for a light hearted, and funny love story. If you're looking for high scale edgy Hollywood action, you'll be disappointed. If you just want to be entertained, and honestly, in a way, aside from the super-tomb-raider hundred perfect shots and their ability to overcome obscene weights of a million bullets with apparent ease, I thought it was kinda charming. Their chemistry is off the scale. It's a love story, with bullets, instead of awkward silences over dinner and unanswered emails raising uncertainty about if they were good enough on their last date or some other Meg Ryan shiz.
