Sadly Over-hyped
This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Overall I thought it was a good movie. Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow (who I normally find annoying) were good. The only person I found creepy was David Suchet (the detective). I don't know if that was their intention, but he was just weird and creepy. He creeps me out every time I have watched the movie.
This was better than I was expecting it to be, full of twists and turns and holding a decent level of suspense throughout. Admittedly I never really bought into the idea of Michael Douglas being married to Gweneth Paltrow but they both did a great job. Douglas plays (another) wealthy executive type here, who learns that his wife is having an affair with a struggling artist and then offers the (very young and probably for the time not well known) Viggo Mortensen half a million dollars to murder her. The plan should have been "perfect" but....This is apparently a remake of the Alfred Hitchcock classic 'Dial M for Murder'(1954) which I'm curious to see now, and a slick little thriller in its own right, as I wasn't ever sure where it was going to go what with everybody betraying everybody. Good plot.I also really enjoyed David Suchet in a small role as the detective, piecing it all together. I was left wondering at the end though if "David" really loved her or not? On that note Olivier Martinez played almost exactly the same character in Unfaithful -a somewhat tortured, sexy, bohemian, struggling artist. They even looked similar 10/4/15
I have viewed this film several times and kept trying to think of what was it that bugged me so much about it. These kids are riding the wave of luxury and have servants (i.e. with keys) and access to a locksmith.Hence, one would presume the entire basis of this crime unravelling would NEVER be lack of an extra key. Well, well, well....guess the rich have to trim those corners and keep Mr. Red Line at bay.I was surprised that Ms. 80lbs Wet would just savor the thought of having an entire Pork Roast with veggies awaiting her salivating greedy chops. Guess who's coming to dinner cupcake? The saving grace of the film of course is our dear voluptuous Viggo. Although he keeps repeating lines, mumbles a lot and appears quite the patsy, I was able to force field my way to appreciate his muted performance. He has been around too long to have accepted this type of role but Mikey made him an offer he chewed on....haha.High recommend for Armenian(?) interactions, high seas romance, financial collapse and doom lovers, and good ol' stupidity!
Emily (Gwyneth Paltrow) is the wife of wealthy New Yorker Steven Taylor (Michael Douglas). She's an aide to UN Ambassador Alice Wills and having an affair with painter David Shaw (Viggo Mortensen). Steven suspects her infidelity and is in dire financial trouble. He also discovers that David is con man named Winston Lagrange and offers him $500k to kill his wife. After the break-in, police detective Mohamed Karaman (David Suchet) investigates. In the original, Alfred Hitchcock is able to create some limited sympathy for Grace Kelly by making her a blackmail victim. There is no such feelings for Gwyneth Paltrow. Also David Shaw is a con man in this version so there is no likability for the cheating couple. Douglas is a great slick puppet master but I don't really care about these people. It's great to have Douglas slithering across the screen but director Andrew Davis is unable to generated the needed tension or thrills.
