it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.

The best way to describe this movie to someone is to ask them if they ever watched Alice in Wonderland.Satoshi Kon has always had a thing for duality as the core theme in this movies, whether it is Mima's private and public image in Perfect Blue, Chiyoko's heart-wrenching story both on screen and off-screen in Millennium Actress, or the salvation and destruction of family in Tokyo Godfathers. In Paprika, it is reality and dreams that play as the tools for this theme when a device allows the user and others to observe and even delve into their own and other's dreams.Paprika's beautiful animation accompanied with hypnotizing music made this a real treat to watch. I was pretty confused at first on what was going on, but knew enough to not get completely lost. This movie accurately portrays just how absurd dreams are and Paprika shows what happens when we allow our subconscious to run amok, causing chaos and confusion, sometimes in beautiful ways. Characters were very fun to watch and the story, whether absurd or grounded, is engaging to follow along.Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone interested in Kon's work or wants to try something a little out of the norm for anime.

A whimsical and incredible man made anime. The soundtrack, graphic style, content, music perfectly matches with the theme, deliver such a whimsical feel as well as hauntingly thoughts. I have watched so many Japanese's animes and I have learned that they are good at making complicated and uncomplicated things happens at the same time. The movie is not only breaking everyone's imagination but also limits, abilities, leaving the audiences in the confusion of not knowing what's actually real. When you think about it, this plot is kind of similar to 'Inception' US movie, but with higher graphic feels and more whimsical scenes, Papurika has pushed this concept of dreams up to a new level.I'm not a really good at writing but I have forced myself to compliment something on this fascinating movie. This anime is incredibly well made and once again I want to bow myself in front of Japanese dedication..

Bursting with untapped imagination, flowing with limitless creativity & presenting its story in an unabashedly freewheeling manner, Paprika (also known as Papurika) is part fantasy, part sci-fi & part mystery film with a bewildering plot that never makes any sense yet it manages to provide a cinematic experience that's dazzling, audacious & unique at the same time.Set in the near future, Paprika presents a world in which technology exists that allows users to see other people's dreams & is used by psychologists to help their patients by entering their dreams. Chaos ensues when the device is stolen & used by the thief to distract people with their own dreams even when they are awake, thus forcing the titular character to find the one responsible before it's too late.Co-written & directed by Satoshi Kon in what is his fourth & final film before his tragic death in 2010, Paprika is captivating from its opening moments and is a surreal work that blends the worlds of dream & reality unlike any other example before. The plot is highly character- driven though the territories it voyages in is bound to frustrate those who might be looking for something coherent or formulaic. The animation is very detailed and exquisitely explores the wide, blank canvas of the dream world. Camera-work is fluid, dynamic & vibrant and its excellent use of colour palette adds a rich texture to the whole narrative. Editing provides a fierce pace to the story which is on the run at all times & cleverly intercuts between dreams, reality n movies. And last but not the least, its background score is truly one of a kind.On an overall scale, Paprika is an acid trip made by people who were on acid throughout its production and is at its most rewarding when you're going with the flow. Paprika herself is quite a fascinating character & her arc is superbly handled by Kon. All in all, it's the picture that inspired Christopher Nolan's Inception yet does a much better job in blurring the dream & real world without sacrificing the chance to explore the infinite possibilities of this realm.

Paprika (2006) is what we can call a good fusion between psychology, philosophy and animation. So, what makes Paprika be a masterpiece of cinema and Japanese animation? Of course that it is the flawless depicting of a world full of freedom, imagination and creativity, like "Dream". Similar to another masterpiece, Sandman by Neil Gaiman. Both, Kon and Gaiman, were capable of making dreams come true. To read the graphic novels of Gaiman or watch the delightful psychedelic Kon's movie, is like diving into another reality that reflects our weakness, sins and evils, but also our great qualities while human beings, as our courage to stand up before the unknown or nihilism (our lack of meaning to life).Like a real dream, we don't want to see the end of the film, 'cause the end of a dream is when we wake up to "reality". In other words, waking up is like putting an end point in a long journey through a world of dreams, and face the cruel, dry and uncolored reality. Just like has done king Oedipus when facing his misfortuned destiny (killing his father and marrying his mother, as prophesied by the clairvoyant).
