I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

I know I am in the minority but other than 'Blazing Saddles', I'm not the biggest Mel Brooks fan. Young Frankenstein is ranked 13 on AFI's top laughs and I find that to be waaaaay too high. I love Gene Wilder, I love spoofs but I just didn't find the film that funny. The only time that I recall laughing was during the "Putting on the Ritz scene which is truly a laugh out loud moment.

I am a fan of mel brooks and gene wilder, and i can say this is both of their best work. i saw what this was satirizing a year after this, it was eh, this was the better movie. there wasn't one frame of film i wasn't invested or laughing my heiny off. i quote this movie a lot. if its a mad mad mad mad world is my favorite slapstick comedy, this is my favorite dialouge comedy. how can you blame me with such funny comedians like marty feldman, cloris leachman, gene wilder and more, even a cameo from lex luther. trust me, you should watch this movie. from abby normal brains to rolls in the hay, you wouldn't regret watching this

After "Blazin' Saddles", Mel Brooks has taken parody to a whole new meaning. In "Young Frankenstein", Gene Wilder plays the decedent of the infamous mad scientist who lives in America, and doesn't want to have anything to do with him. After being haggled by a student, a visitor from the old country gives him information left by his uncle. When he goes to Transylvania, the hilarity ensures. He meets Igor(Marty Ingles), along with some other weird characters. I was laughing non- stop. I also liked when after they built the monster(Peter Boyle), the scene with the blind hermit(Gene Hackman) was classic. I laughed the hardest when it came to the lighting of the cigar. The monster got his thumb of fire. In the story, fire is the monster's weakness. With all the characters from the Shelley's novel, this movie is more funny than scary. Mel Brooks topped himself off with this. And it's a keeper. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

'Young Frankenstein' - a film sadly brought back into the public's mind this year due to the sad death of Gene Wilder. It feels wrong to review this film. It belongs to another era, it's comedy was so different to ours now. In some ways that's a good thing, it's certainly more sharper than what we produce today, but there are moments that are dated and unfunny. It's a cult classic though, and you can see why. There are some iconic moments in amongst the run time, and that's why people watch it again and again. As a casual viewer though I couldn't quite buy into the madness in the same way I could with Wilder and Brooks' other project 'The Producers'.
