Pretty Good
Boring
Admirable film.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
Gervais fans will enjoy an easy watching, feel good film, with the trademark Comedy Writer's awkward demeanour and funny lines. This is as close as we can get to Romantic comedy for Gervais, where oodles of sloppiness would seem out of place.A moral to the story kind of tale, where everybody loves an underdog!
I'm not sure why so many reviews place the total under 7, this is a very much better movie than the rating. This is less of a comedy than a change of life story with comic effects due to the talents of the cast. Greg and Ricky both have impeccable comic timing as well as serious dramatic abilities. Tea Leoni is perfect in her role as the pursued and confused widow, both for her obvious beauty and her ability to make any situation real, not an easy task in a movie where the dead come to life. There could have been improvements, toward the end in summing up the needs of others to allow their departure, but that is really quibbling. I'm very glad I took the time to watch this movie and expect that the over 30 set will find something to enjoy, and the older one gets the more there will be.
Frank (Greg Kinnear) barely escapes from getting crushed by a falling AC unit only to be run over by a bus. Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) is a reclusive dentist in NYC. He has a routine colonoscopy under general anesthesia, and when he wakes up, he finds that he can see dead people. Gwen (Téa Leoni) is Frank's widow and Pincus' neighbor. She is about to remarry a Richard (Billy Campbell), and Frank wants Pincus to stop it.This is a fairly low energy comedy especially with Kristen Wiig. She's got this stuttering halting timing. Their little exchange is a bit of fun. After that, the comedy is oddly uncomfortable. Frank actually cheated on Gwen. Pincus is a people hating jerk. And Gwen doesn't like Pincus. None of them have any chemistry. No matter how hard they try to make Pincus human, I can't see Gwen with him. Gwen falling for Pincus is just a Hollywood fiction. Some of the ghosts are kinda funny. The naked one has some especially funny moments. The trio's split does make it better. At least, it's logical. Only after the trio split up does Pincus get down to the business of actual personal growth. The last 30 minutes is where the movie gets right. The lesson learned is truly touching. Only then does the trio make sense.
A ghost story and a love story, ánd a better thyself story. There are plenty of both of those, and I'm usually not up for them, but with this combination, and with this cast (particularly Gervais, but also Leoni and Kinnear) and David Koepp as director and writer I couldn't resist. Even this third viewing was well worth my time. Of course, you could really dig into the story's details and try to take apart every little thing about it (for instance, why doesn't he sue the hospital? He would have a fair chance if they'd made him sign a waver when he was still pretty much under narcosis), but it is simply beyond the point of the film.I simply like this one, and here is why: the chemistry between the actors is excellent, the story has plenty of twists and turns and it is more than adequately filmed. Sure, things get quite sentimental at times, easy romantic comedy lurks in many corners, and near the end things go a little too smoothly, but still, this one definitely has its charms. In fact, it reminded me somewhat of those grand old comedies from Billy Wilder, harboring a certain amount of innocence and playfulness which is rather hard to find these days. And finally, Gervais and the script bring plenty of sharpness and darkness to it.A good 7 out of 10.
