Best movie ever!
This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
...that's the whole description you need for this movie...no really there isn't much to talk about. "Shoot em' up" is a very simple but incredibly fun and cartoony action movie, that never tries to be something else. The one-liners are cheesy, the action is so over-the-top that i can 't compare it to something else i've seen, and the plot is so paper- thin that the movie just starts, without introducing anything, you press play and it just goes without stopping. The first shot of the movie is Clive Owen looking intensely into the camera and than munching on a huge carrot, while sitting on a bench seemingly without any reason, and then the plot just comes to him...quite literally. And the Elmer Fudd of our picture is played by Paul Giamatti, who is more psychotic as ever, it's amazing, and disgusting to watch. The action is the selling-point of the film and man does it never holds back. In one scene Clive Owen sleeps with Monica Belucci and shoots some bad guys, while doing it. In another scene he jumps out of a plane and has a skydiving-shootout with some bad guys...you won 't believe it until you see it... Only downside is the editing, which is at times a bit too fast and sometimes you don't really know where all the people are in the room, but because of the cartoony nature and the fun moments it's not too bad.The most interesting part is that it works, strangely enough, the weak characterization and the cartooniness of the film work in it's advantage, at the end it get's down right touching and intense, you really begin to care for what's going on, and enjoy the experience...at least i did.All in all "Shoot em' up" does all it set out to deliver, and even more, it's pure entertainment and incredibly fun...
I opted to watch this movie because I just got through watching another Clive Owen movie: "Intruders". "Intruders" was the third Clive Owen movie I'd seen and I thought that all three of them were excellent so let me see what else he's done. One thing is for sure... this movie is not to be taken seriously, not in the least bit. This is pure action junkie stuff. No real plot, no substantive dialog, no character development, not even realistic action. I mean, who kills people with carrots? Because they made the movie overtly satirical and over-the-top it made it somewhat more enjoyable, but honestly I'm too old for this type of movie. This movie is probably ripe for the 18-25 male demographic. An orgy of sex, violence, a little heavy metal and terrible one-liners. "Shoot 'Em Up" was replete with poor bad guy aim, high bad guy body count, Mythbusters type stunts, spontaneous sex, appalling puns and a baby. Paul Giamatti offered some nice comic relief, Monica Bellucci some nice eye candy and Clive Owen some nice gun play. Those were the only redeeming qualities of this teenagers fantasy.
Carrot chomping Mr. Smith (Clive Owen) sees a pregnant woman chased by a man. He comes to her rescue but more killers follow. In the shootout, the woman delivers her baby. The woman is killed and Smith escape with the baby. Karl Hertz (Paul Giamatti) leads his men in hot pursuit. Smith tries to leave the baby with madam Donna (Monica Bellucci) but she refuses. Karl arrives at Donna's but Smith is able to rescue her.I really like the ridiculous action and the lack of an introduction. It's outrageous and the movie doesn't care. A blow job to buy a baby bulletproof vest is funny. Writer/Director Michael Davis needs a bit sharper visual and editing style. He also needs to hide the Toronto location a whole lot better. Despite being a movie of ridiculous action, the parachute action goes too far and it doesn't particularly look good anyways.
'Shoot 'Em Up' is Bad-Ass! An action-packed fare, that works for the genre it adapts. I had fun!'Shoot 'Em Up' Synopsis: A man named Mr. Smith delivers a woman's baby during a shootout, and is then called upon to protect the newborn from the army of gunmen.'Shoot 'Em Up' is purely time-pass entertainment. Explosions, gun-fights, blood, gore, brutality...'Shoot 'Em Up' has it all. And that's precisely the reason why 'Shoot 'Em Up' works. It hits the bull's eye.Michael Davis's Screenplay is no-holds-barred. Davis's Direction, on the other-hand, is stylish. Cinematography is good. Editing is fairly done. Action-Sequences are great.Performance-Wise: Clive Owen is first-rate. Monica Bellucci looks gorgeous, as ever & delivers a convincing performance. Paul Giamatti is enjoyable as the villain.
