Best movie of this year hands down!
If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
Johnny English goes up against international assassins hunting down the Chinese premier. Johnny English: Reborn is an amazing, hilarious and action packed sequel it fixed many things from the first for example the jokes hit the spot most of the time, the villain is way more interesting and the run time is also better with the film having more story and more and Rowan Atkinson is even better this time as the title character the movie also has a much better cast than the first famous and talented people such as Dominic West and Rosamund Pike and X-Files star Gillian Anderson. Watching this film in the theaters was amazing back in the day and i don't regret it at all both the director and the entire cast did such a fantastic job with this film than any reboot does this days i give Johnny English: Reborn a 10 out of 10.
Overall, there is more suspense and tension created than in the first one; additionally there are also quite a few spoof Bond film scenes. The plot moves away from 'British' things which the first one relied one plot wise. The casting is imaginative with Rosamund Pike and Dominic West; and Mark Ivanir provides a shortish but interesting character. This film has clearly been directed better, and the score for the film is pleasant as well. Tucker is not on the same level as Baugh but it was probably for the better to move the series on. The kitchen scene at the end of the credits is hilarious and 'In the hall of the Mountain King' is now forever associated with this in my mind! A good sequel, but lacking in places.
I remember watching this on the plane back from Hong Kong four years ago. I couldn't sleep and wanted to kill the long flight hours by watching what in-flight movies were available, which included this one. By coincidence, there's a scene in Hong Kong when Johnny English says thank you in Mandarin, when the official language is actually Cantonese. Whether that was a deliberate joke or an ignorant attempt at accuracy, I don't know.Having seen the first film when it first came out, I have to say this sequel fares a lot worse. All the 'jokes' here backfire horribly. One such 'joke' is when Johnny English attempts to capture who he thinks is the cleaning lady assassin, but it turns out to be an innocent old woman, who he had proceeded to beat up in front of a group of children. What was supposed to be slapstick, turned out forced and sadistic. Not including what was on the trailers, I think there were only one or two small moments in this entire film I found funny, but everything that made it terrible has overshadowed my ability to remember them.
The combination of high-tech thrillers a la James Bond and the so English humor of Rowan Atkinson worked fine for me in the original 'Johnny English' and work even better in the 'Johnny English Reborn' sequel released eight years later, which I got to see only now. If I am to look for the perfect comedy entertainment I would go for something like this because it succeeds to be funny and anti political-correct, while keeping some logic and sending references to the original movies it is inspired from, without taking itself too much seriously at any moment. If I am to decide what are the reasons JE works for me better than other similar comedy-parody movies I would of course first of all mention Rowan Atkinson. He is himself, meaning Mr. Bean whatever the role he plays - a combination of Britishness and irreverence, a walking gaffer and catastrophes generator, and yet - a warm human being. The greatest comical character one can identify with since Stan Laurel. The second reason are the scripts of the Johnny English films. They actually have logic. Of course, it's Brit logic, it's movies logic, but if you really put the script of the two Johnny English movies near the stories of most of the James Bond films, not only you will find them similar, but English may won many of the credibility contests. This second and I hope not last installment of Johnny English has also the great advantage to bring back to screen one of my mostly beloved actresses, Gillian Anderson of X-Files fame. Did I say that was my preferred TV-series of all times. I did and now you know it all too. I hope that director Oliver Parker (or somebody else) will go on with the JE series, and that Gillian will become Atkinson/English's Q for a long time.
