Best movie of this year hands down!
To me, this movie is perfection.
Bad Acting and worse Bad Screenplay
To all those who have watched it: I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do.
There may be no other movie that better illustrates the absurd by being absurd. Dustin Hoffman as existential detective Bernard is classic, spewing utter nonsense that often sounds reasonable, but ultimately doesn't mean anything at all. Like my summary quote - in trying to analyze it, the line seems to be a profound comment on the absolute nature of mathematics. On the flip side, so what? The most distracting thing about this movie is that one is always a few moments behind the events occurring on screen contemplating what was said a mere few seconds ago. The dialog by Hoffman and Lily Tomlin doesn't allow you to come up for air most of the time, because you're either stymied or laughing hysterically at the nonsense. My point is not to make fun of existentialism, the movie does that well enough by itself. It skewers those deep thinkers who think they can come up with the secrets to the mystery of life in a neat, compact little package. Personally, I went through my own existentialist period while transitioning from high school to college, and it was as confusing a time for me as this picture. So forgive me for making this a short review. I'm going to transcend space and time here for a couple of minutes and get my bearings before I take a walk up to the lake and watch the sun set. Then maybe, just maybe, I'll watch this movie again.
When Albert (Jason Schwartzman) is struggling to understand the meaning behind a series of coincidences, he calls upon the help of Bernard (Dustin Hoffman) and Vivian (Lily Tomlin), a couple of existential detectives. Their 'investigation' changes not only Albert's life, but of the people around him too.I'd heard a lot about this movie, so was pretty excited to finally get a chance to watch it. I have to admit, it is not even close to what I expected. I mean, I never really knew what it was about beforehand, but it went against everything I imagined. And, to be fair, that was a good thing, as I went into it with a lot of curiosity.Looking back on it, though, I don't know if this was a good film. There was a lot I did like, and a lot that I didn't like, and I'm still at a loss to work out whether the pros outweighed the cons, or vice versa. On the one hand, there's the story. I'm a big fan of 'Being John Malkovich', which also takes a wry look at existentialism and the meaning of life. 'I Heart Huckabees' plays along on the same themes but, frankly, it just doesn't have the same strength. Yes, it's very much tongue-in-cheek, but I do think that it is far too pretentious at times, with a keen desire to indulge in itself. After 90 minutes, that becomes very grating. But on the other hand, you have the acting. What makes 'I Heart Huckabees' fun to watch are the performances. Other than Schwartzman (who I really really don't enjoy watching), the entire cast is on brilliant form. Dustin Hoffman is his usual excellent self, and actors like Jude Law and Naomi Watts do very well in their roles. The MVP, though, is Mark Wahlberg. This film was made well before he become a big mainstream success story, but you can start to see the comic ability that he is so famous for now. His character is so fun, and you can see that he threw himself into the role 100%.So the question is: does a cast of excellent actors make up for what is a self-indulgent and weak storyline? Even as I type this, I just can't work that out. I think it's a film that will always divide audiences, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. Whether you end up loving it or hating it, it deserves to be seen at the very least. If you want to see a film that goes against the usual Hollywood grain, this is your lot.
This was the worst piece of crap that I have ever seen. It's not funny and it poses no philosophical thought worth having. It has no message, no answers, and stupid questions. Oh and again, it's not funny.Of course existentialism is stupid in itself really because it poses questions that have no answers and if followed could lead a man to complete insanity and the only people who really grapple with existential questions are extremely sad, lost, confused, and sometimes (dare I say it?) even pathetic people. This was actually explained briefly in this horrible piece of sh*t movie, where they connected his confusion and self-betrayal to the cat story.David O. Russel struck out on this one. He's made several good movies. This movies isn't one of them.I am very angry as I wasted my Thursday night on this f*cking piece of crap.F*ck you, David Russel.
I Heart Huckabees is a philosophical comedy film that stars an ensemble cast that includes Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Isabelle Huppert, Mark Wahlberg and Naomi Watts.Director and screenwriter David O. Russell returns to the more idiosyncratic territory of his earlier work with this intelligent and offbeat film.Bernard and Vivian Jaffe are a married couple who run an existential detective agency where they sift through the lives of their clients in order to discover the source of their angst. The Jaffes' latest client is Albert Markovski, an environmental activist who has a very large rock and a great deal on his mind; their study of Albert's problems lead Bernard and Vivian to Brad Stand, a public relations executive with a chain of successful variety stores, Huckabees. While publicly allying himself with Albert's environmental initiatives, behind the scenes Brad is running roughshod over responsible land management with little care for the consequences. When Brad learns he's being watched by the Jaffes, he hopes to co-opt them by hiring them himself; however, the plan has unexpected consequences when their questioning leads Brad's girlfriend, well-scrubbed model Dawn, into reassessing her life and relationships. Meanwhile, Albert finds himself joining forces with Tommy,a firefighter and fellow environmentalist who has been having second thoughts about Bernard and Vivian's ideas and methods after a long-term investigation and has since fallen under the spell of nihilist poet and philosopher Caterine Vauban.Russell directs an excellent cast in a thought provoking existential comedy that is very funny and very well acted. The actors soldier away like the professionals they are, saying the words as if they mean something. Only Wahlberg is canny enough to play his role completely straight, as if he has no idea the movie might be funny. The others all seem trying to get in on the joke, which is a neat trick. Also, individual moments and lines and events in the film are funny in and of themselves. Viewers may be mystified but will occasionally be amused. Obviously,it took boundless optimism and energy for Russell to make the film.Check it out for yourself and enjoy the ride.
