Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

Nanny McPhee appears at the door of a harried young mother who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. But once she’s arrived, Nanny discovers that the children are fighting a war of their own against two spoiled city cousins who have just moved in. Relying on everything from a flying motorcycle and a statue that comes to life to a tree-climbing piglet and a baby elephant, Nanny uses her magic to teach her mischievous charges five new lessons.

It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

This is an OKAY kids movie about working together and sharing and blah blah blah but what kills me about this movie is Maggie Gyllenhaal is perfectly willing to kill her children, her sisters children, Nanny McPhee, AND two neighbors for some barley. At the end a bomb (I would assume is conjured by the weird looking chick that I wouldn't let around my pets much less my children) lands in the barely field and the mom let's the CHILDREN try to disarm it and if it wasn't for the crow that happens to enjoy eating explosive putty (because such a thing as hardened putty that explodes was used then, I guess) they would have all been blown all over the farm. Oh and this is besides the fact of the two "hit women" that are about to eviscerate Rhys Ifans in the kitchen and leave his entails all over the place for the children to see and then stuff him like a scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All in all a perfect children's movie!

Emma Thompson is an artist of s many gifts that she defies categorization. In addition to being one of our best actresses of the day, she is also a very fine writer and not at all afraid of jumping into 'family movies' that bundle fun as well as sage advice. Her she has written and stars in NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS and lets hope this isn't her last visit. Nanny McPhee appears as a grotesquely ugly woman who arrives in households besotted with potential disasters and in the course of her manipulations of the microcosm that initiated the problems she has a sense of magic in reversing the behavior patterns of children and adults to bring about a happy ending to a crisis waiting to happen. This trip finds her visiting the farm of Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal) whose husband (Ewan McGregor) is off at war, leaving the care of the three children and the farm and life in general in her hands. Add to that the constant interference of Isabel's pestering brother-in-law (Rhys Ifans) and a battery of spoiled cousins and the madness of a misplaced bomb form the sky and Nanny has her hands full teaching the children not only how to cope but also how to behave in a manner that aids Isabel's survival. Maggie Smith joins this irrepressible cast and in the end it is difficult to judge what entertains most - the madness or the glee. Deep it is not, but it is one of those films you can slip into the telly and enjoy as much as an adult as the youngsters adore it. Fantasy, a bit of family drama, and a lot of fine lessons make this a fluffy movie nearly everyone can enjoy. Grady Harp

I really liked the first Nanny McPhee, so I was looking forward to Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. And I enjoyed it greatly, comparing it to the first, they're about the same score-wise but I prefer the first just slightly. The plot isn't as fresh or quite as imaginative this time round I feel and the film could have been shorter, however the film never fails to be lively, colourful and entertaining which was everything I liked about the first movie. The sets are colourful and gorgeous and captured very well by the luscious cinematography, while the music have a certain energy and liveliness to it. The film goes at a cracking pace as well, maybe they could have slowed it down a tad in one or two scenes, but that is minor really, the script is witty and funny, the message doesn't overly-patronise and the direction is sprightly. The performers do wonderfully. The kids are entertaining and don't fall into the trap of being overly-precocious or annoying. Maggie Smith is a delight to watch, Ralph Fiennes is a welcome presence, Rhys Ifans is entertaining and Maggie Gyllahaal is wonderful with a controlled accent and mannerisms. Emma Thompson is the real delight, she does bring a lot of charm, fun and vigour into her title character. All in all, a very enjoyable sequel that does justice to its predecessor. 7.5/10 Bethany Cox

Emma Thompson is back as both the writer and the star as Nanny McPhee, but this time hired a director. She "returns" but not to the same family. This is a whole new set of situations. It is during the war and the nice family is struggling to make ends meet and keep the farm while dad is away, fighting as an Army man. Relatives from London come to visit for a while and along with the kids in the family make an impossible situation. Until a knock on the door, and there she is Nanny McPhee, 'small c, capital P.' She is sent by the Army to help, but we know she has certain magical qualities, and rapping her walking stick on the floor or the ground makes wonderful things happen.Maggie Gyllenhaal is Isabel Green, the mother. Rhys Ifans is good as Phil Green, the brother-in-law who is no good, has gotten into debt by gambling, and is trying to get Isabel to sign the farm over to him. It is good to see Maggie Smith, here as Mrs. Docherty who seems to run the local store, badly.I must admit I had lots of trouble sticking with it during the first scenes, in the muddy barnyard, with animal feces everywhere and of course all the kids getting into it. But once Nanny McPhee showed up it got watchable. Still, not that enjoyable a movie for adults. Mostly silly stuff.
