Spartacus

The rebellious Thracian Spartacus, born and raised a slave, is sold to Gladiator trainer Batiatus. After weeks of being trained to kill for the arena, Spartacus turns on his owners and leads the other slaves in rebellion. As the rebels move from town to town, their numbers swell as escaped slaves join their ranks. Under the leadership of Spartacus, they make their way to southern Italy, where they will cross the sea and return to their homes.

I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

For younger people, not that young any more, used to Micheael Douglas' career, it is interesting to see his dad in action. Protagonist with traces more like Daniel Craig or Russel Crowe in our days. This epic shows Hollywood effort before technological resources of special effects. We can notice in scenarios, artificial or natural, and in extras use, the effort of creation of remarkable landscapes. With perceptive and pragmatic script, the movie chooses posterity instead of clichè. Its greatest merit is, in my opinion, reinforce that the conquest of freedom and relative peace of today were not natural, but result of profound clashes. Plus, it portraits the transition from democracy to authoritarianism of Rome.

Spartacus is one of the best epic of all time, and one of the best films already made, not to mention that a year earlier had released Ben-Hur, and the public may attend expecting a movie or the same level or better, if someone ask me which epic I think better, Spartacus or Ben-Hur, I would answer Spartacus, even me finding Ben- Hur incredible, Spartacus suffered much in production, Anthony Mann directed the opening scene of the film, and then was fired for fighting with own Kirk Douglas that besides acts is producer, in his place entered yet unknown to much of the world, Stanley Kubrick, that even without much artistic freedom, managed to make a spectacular movie (even if he did not liking the movie), Spartacus already caught my attention, the photo caught my attention, excellent, the production is excellent, even not being level of Ben- Hur (what it is almost impossible), the cast is great, Kirk Douglas this excellent as Spartacus, even at times be a bit forced, more he sent too well, Jean Simmons is very well as Varinia (which does not exist), Laurence Olivier, in my opinion is the best thing in the movie, he's incredible, you feel anger Crassus, so was weird the scene he's a slap in Spartacus, the cast still has John Gavin, John Ireland, Tony Curtis, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov who won the Oscar for best supporting actor, he is well, but I think anyone who deserved to win an Oscar was Laurence Olivier, and Kirk Douglas deserved an indication at least, the soundtrack is excellent, the dialogues are very good, the script Dalton Trumbo is excellent, even some dialogues being longer than it should, the film has great moments, plus has two striking to me, the scene of the I Am Spartacus, which is incredible, see slaves shouting it, even knowing that this act would they be crucified, and the end when Varinia with the child is under the Spartacus cross is very exciting (even in real life, Spartacus actually died in battle), which left exciting in that final scene was the soundtrack is amazing, along with Varinia saying that his son was born free, Spartacus is too much in battle, is well done, even being a 1960 movie, the final battle is very good and very well done, the costumes are also very good, are various types of clothing, the film improves every time the first act is the slowest, since have almost no battle over the other two are excellent, it is quite shocking see all slaves on the cross, Spartacus is one of my favorite movies, this in my Top 10, is exciting, has great battles, great dialogues, a good direction of Stanley Kubrick, even he did not have much artistic freedom, and we see Kirk Douglas in his prime, I particularly think Spartacus along with the best Braveheart epic already done, with Lawrence of Arabia and Ben-Hur ago. Note 10

A Film Directed by a young Stanley Kubrick that is Unlike the Kubrick We Know and Love. He Surrenders (ouch) to the Conventions of the Time and seems to be more than Competent but Artistically Anemic. But Fulfilling His Contract Obligations Professionally He Delivered a Mammoth Movie that is Compelling and Timeless. That of Humans wanting to be "Free" from Bondage, Servitude, and Inhuman Evil Entrenched in Unenlightened Power and Corruption. The Movie is Corny and a Product of its Era, but is One of the more Intellectual "Epics" and Tries Mightily to be Progressive. It mostly Succeeds and when Viewed Today is full of Fun and Despite its Length is, along with Demille's "The Ten Commandments" (1956), a Glorious Entertainment, if Confined by a Hollywood System of Conventional Conservatism, Blacklists, and DemagogueryThe Cast is Stellar, the Cinematography Beautiful, and the Aching Caste System is its central Theme. Emotional to Extremes, it can't help but be, the Film has its Clunks and some Miscasting, but Never Fails to be Compelling, even as it Demonstrates its Obvious and Manipulative way it is Smarmy in the Love Scenes and Heavy Handed with its Staged Shots of the "Family Bonding" that Depicts Campfire Coziness among the newly Freed People. It was Defiant for its Time with an Unusual and Audacious, against the grain Rebellion from the Studio System. Kirk Douglas was Not to be Denied and this "Labor of Love" Movie Manages to Deliver its Message as much Pomp and Circumstance to be Audience Friendly and as much Anti-Establishment that was Allowed at the Time for a Film of this Magnitude.

I went to Rome last fall and I'm now amusing myself by watching lots of movies set in Rome, both present-day and ancient-history oriented. I enjoyed "Ben Hur" and "Quo Vadis", but "Spartacus" was kind of difficult to sit through. Maybe it was too much of a Kirk Douglas overdose. Maybe it was Peter Ustinov (who I usually enjoy) hamming it up to the point where he was out-hamming Charles Laughton, a neat trick in itself. Ustinov apparently won an Oscar for his performance; personally I thought his humor was misplaced and overdone in this context, although he was certainly funny.I've read that up to 10,000 people were associated with this film, and I think I saw them all in one scene where the slaves are coming over the hills towards the Romans. For a moment I automatically thought the effect had to be CGI, but then of course I remembered this was 1960 and those were in fact real extras running down the hillside like thousands upon thousands of ants. That shot was absolutely breathtaking; I'm glad I saw the film just to be able to experience the awesomeness of that scene. One of my favorite character actors, Harold J. Stone, had a significant supporting role as one of Spartacus' advisers; it was fun to see him in his prime doing drama.I'm sure I would have gotten less out of the film if I hadn't had the "I was in Rome" focus to hang it all on. The sight of the crucified slaves, dozens of them, hanging all along both sides of the Appian Way was rather sobering, to say the least, since I couldn't help but recall the moments I spent walking along that same road.I've seen "Ben Hur" a couple of times and I would certainly consider watching "Quo Vadis" again, but I think once was enough for "Spartacus".
