Such a frustrating disappointment
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
This movie is a no-brainer and gives hope to bighearted dorks around the globe. To get the girls (oh yes, girls) and coming out a winner while tackling a subject such as sexuality in an untroubled and fun way while simultaneously getting a happy ending? Great!Easy and fun, albeit, unbelievable but still a great ride. Literally. I had a few good laughs in there and I'm pretty sure you'll appreciate the lightheartedness of it too. If it was meant to be a flop when it first came out and doesn't seem like it has cult following potential, I now highly believe the opposite. I think this movie has the makings of a "classic adolescent movie". Give it 10 more years and the teens of the coming age will give I Love You, Beth Cooper a chance as my peers have given The Breakfast Club and Empire Records a chance. And you know what? Everybody loved those movies. So, I won't be surprised either if people will end up loving this as well.
Valendictorian Dennis Cooverman (Paul Rust) gives the craziest of all graduation speech. First he proclaims "I love you, Beth Cooper". Beth (Hayden Panettiere) is the hot popular cheerleader. That's before his speech makes enemies. He even declares that his best friend Rich Munsch (Jack Carpenter) is gay. He invites her to his graduation party. It's only him and Rich but then surprisingly, Beth shows up with her girlfriends Cammy (Lauren London) and Treece (Lauren Storm). This movie really struggles with Paul Rust as the lead. He's a geeky looking guy but not nearly adorable enough. He's quirky but not that funny. The character really demands to be played by a faux-geek rather a real nerd like Rust. Hayden Panettiere's character is not somebody on a pedestal. She's a little bit complicated and that's a good thing. The problem is that she's not the lead. Rust is the lead and he can't carry the movie.
Warning This Review may contain Spoilers When I first saw this film I was expecting a film that would simply be full of large belly laughs and maybe a witty line or two. What I got was a teen film about growing up and realizing that sometimes reality is different than fantasy and sometimes surprisingly better. The film's lead Hayden Panettiere has the makings of a young Kate Hudson. She is able to make the most outrageous situation in this comedy seem plausible. The film's main premise is a valedictorian professes his love to Beth Cooper during his speech as well as make jabs at other characters as well most notably Stratford native Shawn Roberts as Beth's built army boyfriend. The film begins as a comedy but it is a comedy that likes to bring out little moments of drama. Small touching scenes that Ms. Panettiere handles very well. This was absolutely not the film that I was expecting. I liked it better then I thought I would. However it still has faults. It is a little slow towards the end but a great little scene on a dock brings everything right back on course.Overall it is definitely a film for the thirteen and over crowd but even adults can find a thing or two to like in this film.
I actually got this movie because I thought it was be horrible and would be a good way to clear my mind of stress and fall asleep. I ended up staying up late because it was surprisingly funny. While, I will admit, the movie is very stupid, it is also very hilarious!!! I'm a huge fan of Superbad, Old School, etc...Usually when such far fetched things happened in a movie that make it even "stupider", I don't like them...I honestly haven't laughed as hard as I did, in certain points in that movie, in a longggggg time! If you're looking for a movie for some simple humor...this wins! I remember seeing the previews for this some time back, and kind of wanted to see it. And then when the movie began, I was a little disappointed, but disappointment turned into me being surprised as to the humor within it!
