This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
This movie is the classic old time 80's horror/crime which I have watched several times and still will do. I think it was just as disturbing psychologically as it was for the murder scenes and I have watched horrors since I was about the size of a munchkin. I was not surprised at all they did a remake but nowhere near as good as the original, the acting and direction is all done very well and I think the script belongs to Terry O'Quinn (The Stepfather) who plays an excellent part and love his expressions and scheming looks on his face. If you like this kinda film then maybe Douglas Jacksons' The Paperboy will be right up your street. I give it a praising 7 out of 10. After all " Father knows best" Enjoy!
I guess when all is said and done, "The Stepfather" is really just a slasher movie. But . . . it's actually a petty damn good one. A great deal of that is the script and taut direction, but also the pacific northwest setting lends some nice eerie atmosphere. Although there's not a whole lot to say about the casting (they just function), it's Terry O'Quinn who claims this movie for his own, and he's really something to see here; a deranged realtor, moving from one fatherless family to the next until his dreams of the ideal Cleaver household are fulfilled (great satire on family values in Reagan's America). But O'Quinn shifts from calm to madness with the flick of a switch and he puts on a how-to on dominating a movie. Its a defined character with just enough hint of backstory to be real (not to mention psychotic). More importantly, he's unforgettable.7/10
"Terry O'Quinn really does elevate some stupid crap." - to loosely quote Brad Jones, the Cinema Snob. The biggest plot holes in the movie stem from how incompetent the police and media are at finding Jerry Blake! They HAVE his picture! All they had to do was run it in the paper! That's sort of how the serial killer John List (this movie was loosely based on) was finally captured! America's Most Wanted broadcasted his story on TV, which had the same effect. With his picture seen by enough people, he had no where to hide. The sub-plot of the Jerry's dead wife's brother hunting him down could have been dropped completely! Despite all of this, I still give the movie an 8 out of 10 for O'Quinn's performance alone. He's that good!
Terry O'Quinn, Jill Schoelen and Shelley Hack star in this 1987 thriller. This begins during Christmas time with a mysterious man (O'Quinn) changing his identity and leaving his home after brutally murdering his family. A year later, we meet teenage girl, Stephanie Maine (Schoelen) and her mother, Susan (Hack) who live with the man who now calls himself, Jerry Blake. Jerry works as a real-estate agent who longs for the perfect family, but it becomes difficult when Stephanie and others get in his way discovering he's not who he seems. This is a good 80's thriller with a good cast and O'Quinn is especially great in it. I recommend this.
