The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

Escape from New York is just pure Awesome fun,a late night sci-fi Adventure Thriller with the BRILLIANT Kurt Russell in his most iconic role ever as the tough Snake Plisskin & he's amazing in this simply amazing!!! This is another classic from one of the greatest & most influential directors of all time the king JOHN CARPENTER & once again he drops us into a very atmospheric world of danger & this time it's New York City that's now become a no go zone prison!!! We all know the incredible iconic story so not talking about that. The look of this movie is AMAZING thanks to the great DEAN CUNDY who worked with Carpenter alot & here cundy gives the film a dark menacing shadow filled gloomy look & when you get light it's often some glowing Neon light & it really shines & stands out it's really stunning!!! Kurt Russell is Fantastic as always & really plays his lone tough guy role perfectly, snake is smart, weary & quick. All the cast are great in their roles & make an impressive ensemble cast with kurt. New York City the prison looks Amazing & is now iconic. The music is outstanding throughout thanks to the multi talented CARPENTER. Everything about this night time Adventure is great movie making & the type of exciting movie that you very rarely get anymore, the closest being the excellent PURGE:ANARCHY (2014). A true carpenter classic

"Call me Snake," Kurt Russell utters to legendary Spaghetti Western actor Lee Van Cleef, as the latter attempts to make a deal with Kurt Russell's character, Lt. Snake Plissken, a decorated war hero-turned-anarchist. Van Cleef's character, another former war hero named Bob Hauk, tells Plissken that only a few hours earlier the President of the United States (Donald Pleasance) was the victim of a terrorist plane hijacking, forcing the President to abandon the plane in an escape vessel destined to crash land in New York City-now the nation's largest, and most dangerous, federal penitentiary.Hauk tells Plissken that, unless he wants to spend the rest of his life behind bars, he better get his ass in there and save the President. "The name's Plissken!" Kurt Russel utters rebelliously. The rest of the movie is pretty much exactly what you'd want out of a stylized sci-fi action piece set in a year that now, in 2018, is already 20 years in the dust. Kurt Russell delivers a 110% Kurt Russell performance, but plays a much grittier character in relation to Big Trouble in Little China's Jack Burton or even his role in The Thing. Carpenter's soundtrack kicks major ass, riding one long synth motif straight through the movie. Isaac Hayes delivers as The Bad Guy, and Donald Pleasance plays a unique version of the hostage, let alone the President of the United States. What can be said...if you love John Carpenter, you should have already seen this movie! And if you love 80s action gems, pop this baby in and enjoy the ride.

This early 80's bit of dystopian sci-fi set in a future America which is now a fascist state has gone on to garner a cult reputation. Set in the future of 1997, Manhattan Island is now a high security prison where the criminal dregs of society are contained. When the president's aeroplane crashes in the middle of this city prison and captured by the resident criminals, a mercenary called Snake Plissken is sent in on a do-or-die mission to retrieve him within twenty-four hours.Escape From New York is another in the long line of strong movies director John Carpenter made in his 70's-80's heyday. After a couple of big horror hits under his belt he returned to the more action-oriented style of his earlier Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), except in this case adding a science-fiction premise to add considerable colour. To this end, the film features dark dilapidated New York settings for the action to take place and these, added to the nice panoramic views of the darkened city add considerable atmosphere. As does Carpenter's main theme music which is amongst the very best be ever composed and given the high calibre of his original soundtrack music, that's saying quite a lot. The film also benefits from a cast of b-movie legends, we have Donald Pleasence as an improbable President of the United States, Isaac Hayes is a blaxploitation styled Duke of New York, Kurt Russell as the iconic eye-patch sporting anti-hero, Adrienne Barbeau appears throughout in an eye-popping low cut tight red outfit, Ernest Borgnine is a comic-relief cabbie, Lee Van Cleef is a hard-bitten police chief and Harry Dean Stanton pitches up as a shifty character called Brain. The film isn't always fully exciting stuff it has to be admitted and it sometimes promises more than it delivers but the set-up, settings and cast are very good, while there are some memorable scenes such as the death match and mine-infested bridge to keep the pace up. Ultimately, this is a very solid bit of early 80's sci-fi action, with enough distinctive elements to ensure its ongoing cult appeal.
