Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

I guess you might call EMMANUELLE one of the most influential films of all time, based purely on the amount of sequels and rip-offs that followed. Seen today, it's a rather slight and dated French erotic movie with lots of softcore sex scenes. Definitely a case of stylish over substance, although not without merit for fans of the genre. The amusingly-monikered Just Jaeckin is a dab hand at creating carefully set up establishing shots and making the most of some location shooting in Bangkok. Unusually for the genre, lead actress Sylvia Kristel seems to have been chosen for her acting performance rather than her looks, because she's quite convincing as the woman undergoing an odyssey of self-discovery.I didn't think that the sex scenes were particularly erotic, but nonetheless there's fun to be had from the globetrotting antics and the other plot elements, including an unexpected round of Thai boxing! Even some tension and creepy moments towards the climax. The likes of EMMANUELLE will never be favourites of mine because this isn't my one of my preferred genres of film, but as visually artistic films go you could do a lot worse.

This is the finest example of soft core movie-making I have watched yet, with a great title song and melodious instrumental accompaniment that gives it all a sensuous and alluring ambiance, very effective slightly hazy photography that makes the bodies even more desirable, and a sweet/ingénue character in the superb shape of angelic-looking Sylvia Kristel who gives you an erection in no time. The upshot is that it makes for a spiritual and physical experience that requires you to take yourself in hand.I had always thought that once you had watched one erotic or more explicit film you had basically watched them all but there is a persistent charm about Emmanuelle that keeps me retrieving it from the cupboard and falling in lust with Sylvia and her nubile female company over and over.It is no longer the shocker that it was in 1974, and anyway I have never been able to watch the 105' French version... so this film has also been a kind of Holy Grail to me, and I am still hoping to watch the full original. There is only one aspect that I regret about this otherwise marvellous erotic experience: That I never got to caress, pore over, and do Sylvia Kristel's ins and outs. But many a mark on my mattress, sofas, carpets, towels, and other items bore evidence in my youth of the indelibly sensual impression this film -- and Sylvia in particular -- left on me. May you enjoy it as much as I have!

I first saw this film back in 1976, and only remembered that it was fiercely arousing to a young man at the time. I didn't catch the story, however. Times have changed since then, and I recently viewed the film a couple of times, when I wrote subtitles to it so I could show it to a close friend.Emmanuelle falls between X-rated and art-house. If one views it as an adult film, then the lack of male frontal nudity and full-on intercourse make the film feel timid. OTOH, for an art film, the plot is quite thin. When the film premiered in the mid '70s, it made a stir. Most of the brouhaha was about it being shown in regular theaters instead of seedy back-alley ones. Today we see so much erotics and sex in regular films and on TV that such discussions would seem ridiculous.Emmanuelle is based on the autobiographical novel with the same name, by Emmanuelle Arsan. The book (1971) was banned in France, ostensibly for too much erotic content, but the Foreign Department may have influenced this, since the story gives a decadent impression of them.Young and innocent Emmanuelle travels to Bangkok to her newly-wed husband, ten years her senior. He lives in a setting where bored Embassy wives resort to promiscuity and intrigue to fend off a sense of boredom and lack of purpose in life. Her husband clearly feels at home in this setting. Both her husband and the wives tell Emmanuelle to "get free of inhibitions", which they themselves clearly have done. The film is essentially her journey towards that goal. Her husband has others help him in "her education".At first viewing the film is admittedly just an erotic flick, with thin connections between the erotic scenes. But after a few more times it becomes clear that director Jaeckin and screen writer Richard really tried to follow the book, and the characters and their actions seemed plausible and natural.Perhaps the most surprising thing about this film is, it does not seem old, like many other European erotic films of the time. One can also view this film as a discourse between the male and female aspects of sensuality. There is the male dream of sex and eroticism without emotional commitment, and promiscuous relations with beautiful, willing girls and women. And the (possibly today somewhat outdated?) female sexuality as sensuality, commitment and pure love, with its slow love making and longing for true companionship.Emmanuelle can also be seen as a spiritual road movie, where she starts off as an innocent, yet strongly sensual girl, who slowly reaches sexual awareness and competence. From sex drive as the master to her as the master and erotics as just another tool in her chest.I would strongly recommend this film especially for grown-ups who have seen enough porn, or love scenes in regular films, and who want to remember instead what erotic meant. There still aren't that many films in this niche between porn and mainstream.

This film is loosely based on the erotic art novel by Emmanuelle Arsan. The fact that it was directed by Just Jaeckin means that it is the best of the Emmanuelle series, and makes the others look like mere skin flicks, which I think they probably are anyway.Sadly, in Britain, the censors, in an effort to save the British public from themselves, have hacked a few scenes out of it, including a "smoking" scene in a nightclub and a rape scene towards the end of the film.Sylvia Kristel seems ideally cast as the protagoniste. Others have called her innocent, but this is not the case: she is not so innocent, but becomes even less so, as her adventures increase her learning and experience.Compared with the novel, the sam-lo scenes are not so well done, and the Mario character is a bit tacky, otherwise the film is well done. Emmanuelle's encounter with Bee is better than the book. Not so good are one or two of the simulated sex scenes; they look pretty phony. This film was exceedingly popular at the time it was released, and has lasted the test of time, even if some of the clothes have not.
