Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies

There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.

Before you rush out to see Analyze This, consider that previous works by writer/director Harold Ramis include Animal House, Caddyshack, and Stripes. All three of these films rely on humor that is occasionally crude and language that is often a bit raw for some tastes. In this regard, Analyze This is much the same as the aforementioned films. As Pauline Kael once said, 'for people that like this kind of thing, this is the kind of thing they will like." If this is not the kind of thing you will like, reread all of my reviews until you find a recommended film that you haven't seen and see if its available on video. For those who are still reading, does this mean that Analyze This is without redeeming social importance? Not at all. Like the other films by Ramis, there are moments of witty dialogue, nuggets of social commentary, and the occasional full-blown belly laugh. Unlike the other films, this film has Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal, major assets in any film. The film also has Lisa Kudrow-if you can't say something nice about something, don't say anything at all.The film Grosse Pointe Blank is about a hired assassin who decides to attend his high-school reunion. Several scenes involve interactions between the assassin and his reluctant therapist. How does a therapist terminate a client whose specialty is termination? This gag that was a subplot in Gross Pointe Blank has been elevated to the status of central theme here. Frankly, this limited theme provides some good gags along the way, but is a bit thin to go the distance.Robert DeNiro (not surprisingly) plays a mafia hit man who is going through a kind of mid-life crisis-he's becoming sensitive and compassionate and its messing up his work. Billy Cystal plays Ben Sobol, the psychiatrist who is hired against his will. Billy Crystal does an excellent job as the psychiatrist, but the real fun here is watching DeNiro create a caricature of some of his greatest roles (e.g., in Godfather II, Goodfellas, and Casino). If you are looking for a way to kill time and your other option is shoveling the driveway, this might be worth a look. There are a few gems along the way, and it's definitely not the worst move I've ever seen. The only other thing to recommend this film, is that if you do decide to "analyze this" it shouldn't take very long.

Analyze This (1999): Dir: Harold Ramis / Cast: Robert De Niro, Billy Crystal, Lisa Kudrow, Joe Viterelli, Chazz Palminteri: Hilarious comedy about problems too big for one person. This is a parody of the roles that Robert De Niro is accustomed too. He plays a gangster seeking professional help and Billy Crystal plays a psychiatrist who unwillingly puts his wedding on hold to assist him. Structure is handled in sitcom fashion with De Niro interrupting Crystal's life at any opportunity. Director Harold Ramis satires the gangster genre and skillfully breaks tension in conclusion. Ramis is known as a director of lewd comedies. Among his best is Caddyshack and National Lampoon's Vacation. De Niro is hilarious as he is reduced to tears over a hidden trauma overwhelming him. Crystal is great as the frustrated psychiatrist juggling his job and his personal life. One of the film's pleasures is how the conclusion is handled. Joe Viterelli as De Niro's loyal bodyguard steals moments especially when Crystal takes control and enters a potential dangerous yet funny situation. The weak link here is Lisa Kudrow as Crystal's bride who is more or less a prop. Chazz Palminteri is cast because obviously Joe Pesci wasn't available. Through De Niro we learn that there is a breaking point to everyone. Through Crystal we learn that we can make a positive impact just by giving our time. Score: 8 ½ / 10

Robert De Niro as a mobster and Billy Crystal as his analyst. Just the premise is enough for a chuckle, but the resulting picture -- "Analyze This" -- is more than a high concept stretched to feature length. This is a funny and extremely satisfying comedy, the best in a while. The picture, which opens today, is not just funny in the moment. It's funny days later. Moments and lines are so perfect that they linger in the mind. In one scene, the analyst has a dream based on a scene from "The Godfather": He's Don Corleone, and the mobster is his son, helpless as a rival gang guns down the old man at a fruit stand. The analyst (Crystal) confides his dream to the mob boss."You mean, I was Fredo?!" De Niro says. "I don't think so." De Niro has figured out that his best strategy for playing comedy is to play it as he would a drama. He plays it straight and lets the situation determine whether it's funny. Audiences will be delighted and slightly shocked at the sight of De Niro, as Mafia boss Paul Vitti, weeping at a sentimental TV commercial. He's at the end of his rope. All the pain he's buried is clamoring to come into the light, and the result is a series of anxiety attacks.A nice aspect of "Analyze This" is that it never gives way to silliness. The setup is a good one, and director Harold Ramis keeps the movie true to it, in tone and style. As outlandish as things get, the characters' dilemmas stay real -- Who could a troubled wise guy turn to? What would an analyst do? -- and there's a dark edge. The threat of violence is ever-present, and with Chazz Palminteri as a rival boss lurking in the background, a happy ending never seems guaranteed.Easily, "Analyze This" is Crystal's best picture. Always at his best when bouncing off of a talented co-star, Crystal has too often found himself in romantic comedies in which he's made a wormy, unconvincing love interest. Here he gets to do great shtick -- in one scene, posing as a consigliere, he double-talks at a meeting of the Mafia commission. But he also holds up the screen opposite De Niro, as Ben, a bored therapist who blossoms into his emotional and professional adulthood over the course of a dangerous and stressful ordeal. It's dangerous because other mobsters are worried that the boss of all bosses is telling the therapist too many secrets. It's dangerous because the feds want to squeeze him for information. It's also dangerous because his patient has a bad temper and a violent streak -- and might, at any moment, turn on him.All the De Niro-Crystal scenes, and there are plenty, are a pleasure to watch. In the first, the crook shows up at the analyst's office, insisting that he's there on behalf of a friend. When the doctor tells him that he thinks the mobster is really describing his own problems, De Niro's take is priceless. He pauses, smiles in awe and says, "You're good. You got a gift, my friend." From there, the doctor can't get rid of this patient, who shows up everywhere. The one-liners and banter are unexpected: The mobster mentions that he has a mistress because there are things he won't do with his wife. When the doctor asks what things, he answers, "Hey, that's the mouth she kisses the kids good night with." De Niro has played so many gangsters that his role here could have seemed like parody. Yet in his own way, Paul Vitti is as real as the Irish gangster De Niro played in "GoodFellas." It's the same type but from a bizarre new angle

A comedy about a psychiatrist (Billy Crystal) whose number one-patient is an insecure mob boss (Robert DeNiro).I have to give these guys credit. DeNiro allegedly wanted the film to be authentic, getting actors from Little Italy. The restaurant scenes were also shot in restaurants that had been gangland murder scenes. Very cool. I was already drawn in from the opening with the Apalachin sequence. While maybe not completely accurate, it is clear the writers made a serious attempt and I appreciate that.Heck, I do not even normally like Billy Crystal, but he really comes through here. The casting of Lisa Kudrow is a bit odd, but it is a comedy so I suppose that is fine. DeNiro shines, as always. He has somewhat typecast himself, but it works... so, hey, that is fine by me.
