The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

It has become rather difficult in comparing this 1951 film version of the award winning play "A Streetcar Named Desire" with the original stage production as no one in today's world is old enough to recall it. Various people from film historians to the director himself Elia Kazan have debated over who gave the definitive interpretation of Blanche, Jessica Tandy or Vivien Leigh. Most viewers enjoy the performance of the latter that much, that the performance of the former has been overshadowed somewhat. There is no doubt that Vivien Leigh gives a haunting and powerful performance as the mentally fragile Blanche but I can't comment upon Jessica Tandy's effort. Marlon Brando is giving a fine example of the kind of actor he was when given a film that was worthy of his talent. He is to cinema what Laurence Olivier is to the theatre. Judging by Brando's performance in the film version, he must have gone down just as well when he was cast as the bullying, controlling, vulgar and brutal Stanley Kowalski in the theatre production that ran on Broadway for something like 2 years. He proved that his kind of acting represented something quite different and fresh. Kim Hunter and Karl Malden give excellent support as Stella Kowalski and Mitch respectively. They both deserved their victories at the Oscars, as did Vivien Leigh. It is rather a pity that Marlon Brando didn't win the Oscar for Best Actor. Karl Malden said it was an absolute joy in working with Brando. They maintained a close friendship that lasted until the time Brando passed away. The play crackles and simmers with sexual tension as Blanche and Stanley engage in their psychological battle of one trying to gain the advantage over the other. Their verbal sparring lights up the screen and both actors compliment each other well. The crude qualities in Stanley which attracted Stella to him in the first place, are the same character traits that deep down, Blanche would wish to be aroused by. In Mitch, Blanche spots an opportunity for happiness. Sadly, this will not bear fruition. A wedge is driven between sisters Stella and Blanche over Stanley until the play reaches its shattering climax. Kim Hunter stated how during all the time it took in setting up the cameras and the lighting, Elia Kazan was always taking the time to rehearse for an upcoming scene and to help sustain the momentum of his actors. This made the filming process a lot more fun and stimulating. Brando was once quoted as saying that he partly based the way he played Stanley on his own father. The sets are quite basic as I would expect from a theatrical film but they serve their purpose very effectively. The film is given a slightly unreal or off centre kind of look because of the sets. The acting, the writing and the direction are all top notch. For me, it begs the question: when do we ever see anything of this quality nowadays?

She's a prissy "wannabe sophisticated", but past her prime for the times, and out of men to play. He's her social opposite. He's living in the "now", won't allow dreamy non-sense to be spoken in his castle, which just happens to be a seedy basement apartment in New Orleans French Quarter. Their surrounding are cheap and that's where the confrontations begin. Vulgar and bright, is our testosterone fueled ogre, barely draped in a t shirt so tight that imdv lists it amongst its' trivia! She's a freaking nutcase who attempts to cover up the truth behind her many shameful transgression with endless blabber about a dreamworld that's just as nauseating. This is one of the best dramas I ever had the pleasure of losing myself in. Elia Kazan doesn't let you out of your small corner while you await each confrontation, yet this would have boiled over early if not for our married sister caught in the middle.Marlon Brando was absolutely brilliant and Vivien Leigh, in the later stages of her "Scarlett" genre was completely terrifying in her cover up acting inside of the characters she floated willingly down the Denial River. The sympathetic plight belongs to Kim Hunters' Stella until the censored end. Would get 10/10 if not for those who stole our script and meaning. This is a story of confrontation that could have been even more of a social juggernaut!

Blanche is no more neurotic than the rest of the mumbling characters, but the most vulnerable (not having enough income to be able to get her own apartment), so it is she that gets marked to be the scapegoat, and gets carted off to a "mental hospital" at the end. Before that climax, you see a troop of impossibly over-emotional people yelling and throwing things. I thought I was watching a nature film about chimpanzees.

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is a great film that pulsates in plenty of passion, cruelty and sharpness. This is a character drama in which you have a very complex and contradictory characters. Scene are scary realistic and relentlessly. I agree with the individuals that this film is milestone in Hollywood. This fact does not apply exclusively to acting. It includes the atmosphere, expression, music and partly scenery. The film is the true wealth of visual succubus. Of course, it's not nice to look at any kind of abuse. However, in this case the abuse is caused by the hopelessness, loneliness and insensitivity. Physical confrontation is tangible and real, full of fury and passion. It's funny to talk about conflict of aristocratic behavior with workers' hooliganism. This is the conflict between reality and illusion. In some scenes are definitely feel the excess energy turns into violence, lust or passion. A dramatic illustration of life in a society that fails. It is a story of anguish and tickles your fancy. Perhaps in this case, censorship is welcome. Let's leave aside the realism. Violent emotions are completely exempt. Therefore, we can talk about immorality, profanity and sinfulness. Two sexually voracious women express their sexuality in a completely different way. Violent husband who does not understand anything beyond his world and a bit confused suitor who recognized something different from the crude everyday.Vivien Leigh as Blanche DuBois, her amazing expression, expression, emotions and mood swings are memorable. Torment and tragedy of a woman who at any time he wants to be a lady. The fight led by herself, which is caused by the suicide of her boyfriend from her youth was an incredibly passionate. After all appearances breakdown preceded by a brutal rape (which should mean a sort of wake-up) and brings it to a complete collapse. Her performance is truly moving and flexible.Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski is brilliant. A loud, healthy, brutal and energetic male in shirt lesser of two numbers. It's amazing how much sympathy garnered immoral, smelly and sexually charged character. However, it is generally attentive husband who expresses his own frustration with physical force. He managed untangle a ball and unfortunately "punish the cat" in his own way.Kim Hunter as Stella Kowalski She's a young woman, torn in all directions. Character, which is a connection between two irreconcilable character. Pregnancy, beatings and stress are somewhat confused. It is interesting that she enjoys the rough, almost animal sexuality by her husband. Karl Malden as Harold "Mitch" Mitchell was somewhat embarrassed and shy suitor who wants to please his mother, who was on the bed. Uncouth character who is actually in the end defeated.Very realistic representation of the human tragedy through the game of shadows, violence, lust, passions, dreams and needs.
