Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
This movie is incredible, and very inspiring if you want to train your dog. The movie is a little dark, but it's also a great family movie. If you own a dog, right after you watch this movie you feel like training your dog. It has a great animal theme, and if you are a dog lover, then I assure you, that you will love this movie.I was a little shocked when I first saw this movie, because it's supposed to be kind of a family movie, but a lot of people died, or got shot. Also Ray (the dad) points a gun at Max (the dog obviously) and threatens to shoot him. A lot of the movie is based on guns, and at the beginning of the movie there is war. There is also a lot of gangs, and low lives in the movie, and all of them but one die at the end.The movie is about a 23 year old guy named Kyle who is a marine. At the beginning of the movie Kyle is on an a mission in Afghanistan, and dies, his dog named Max gets sent to Texas where Kyle's family lives. Max bonds to Kyle's brother Justin, so Justin starts to work with the dog. Justin Makes Bootleg Video games, and sells them to a guy named Emilio. A friend of Kyle's named Tyler sells guns to Emilio...
Nowadays there are no good dog films like a decade ago were. They're restricted to television for the quality only the little kids can get entertained thoroughly. This film is a good news for adults and not a usual story, only from the outside. I mean the story was associated with war, only in the initial segment and then the rest of the narration was somewhat feeling familiar.Inspired by the war dogs who assisted the US soldiers during the war in the middle- east of what is this film is dedicated to. A dog named Max returns States from the service after met with a disaster. Now he's adopted by a family whose son had died fighting the same war along side him. With struggling to adjust a new life, Max finds a close bond with a boy in the family and that leads to an adventure in the nearby woods where they fight against the illegal activists. The same boy from the film 'Lost in the Sun', but here he had full scope for his character. The rest of the cast as well very good, especially the dog. A good story, but anticipated a little better with more developments. Emotionally, it should have been stronger, but somewhat satisfying overall product it was. The locations were beautiful, especially the woods. The end was decent as a story, but they did not get it right in pictures. Seems there's logic missing regarding the geographical area where blast takes place. I know it won't be your top 10 pick from the years, yet not that bad to skip it. Not a dog film I hoped for, but I accept it for the todays scenario where quantity declined. So I say go for it.7/10
I enjoyed the story this movie was trying to tell but I'm not sure why the makers felt the need to use sexuality in a pg movie. The open mouth kiss between two tweens didn't seem to add anything to the value of the movie, and did not seem appropriate for the target audience or the young actors for that matter. That aside, Hats off to our men and women in uniform, and their loyalty thru not only physically trying times, but also thru the many tempting times and difficult decisions they must face every day in battle. As far as pace, I felt the Movie was a little slow in parts. It picked up towards the middle/end though. They also did a great job keeping gore off the screen considering the movie was about war. Max's performance was stellar, I had to check myself during a dog fight scene or two because while rooting for the lead, I kept imagining ASPCA coming to my door. Not sure how they pulled those off but it was clever. All in all, great story line, slow pace to start but worth the patience to soak in the story, moral, and great dog acting.
Set in Texas but filmed in North Carolina, we viewed it on DVD from the public library. The theme revolves around dogs that have been trained and used in war over the decades. This story centers on MAX, a loyal and expert bomb and weapons sniffing dog that loses his owner and seems to be having his own bout with PTSD.Back home in Texas (really NC) MAX seems way out of sorts and the handlers think the best remedy is to put him down. But when the brother of the Marine that had handled MAX during war shows up MAX seems to recognize that he is part of the family, and the boy takes him home. The father of the family is also an ex-Marine, Thomas Haden Church as Ray Wincott, who had been injured in the 1991 brief Gulf War. His son, brother of the deceased Marine, is young Josh Wiggins as Justin Wincott. His mother is played by one of my very favorites, Lauren Graham as Pamela Wincott. So, in this fictional story that is dedicated to war-trained dogs, some criminal activity is injected. An old family friend and now former Marine who had been with the deceased brother, has smuggled some arms into the states and is trying to sell them to Mexicans. So josh and MAX, with the help of some friends, end up hunting down the crooks and helping to prevent the illegal gun sales.I must admit some of the story was a bit cheesy but we enjoyed it anyway.I was also impressed with young Mia Xitlali as Carmen, who helps chase the crooks and in the process takes a pretty good liking to Josh by the end.
