Best movie ever!
a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
this is one of those movies where the direction of it has you clueless. I definitely liked it, and its alternative otherworldly interventions seem to be the end result of this story. What I mean is, there are two different things happening for a veteran of the Desert Storm. We see adrien brody either die or have flashbacks about five or six times...a lot of the film consists of his life within a mental hospital. This is the first time and only time I have seen exclamation and a different kind of passion in the acting and characterization that Daniel Craig plays.Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kris Kristofferson and Brad Renfro....plus kiera knightly all have parts in the movie. The ending of it totally rewinds to Christmas Eve making the sad lifestyle and grumpy mood Kiera had UNREAL.
Not Surprisingly, This Psychological/Time Travel/Life Affirming/Sci-Fi/Horror Show Did Not Do Well at the Box-Office and was Tepidly Reviewed by Critics. Derivative as it May Be, it Presents its Dense, Complex, Story in a Flashy Style with Some Very Good Performances. Besides Adrien Brody Who is Superb, and Keira Knightley Who Struggles Just a Bit, there is Kris Kristofferson Playing a Crusty and Unethical Doctor, Jennifer Jason Leigh as His Counterpart with Scruples, there is a Riveting Daniel Craig as an Inmate in a Small but Compelling Role. The Film is Obviously too Much to Take In for the Mainstream and it's One of Those that is Disjointed by Design and May be Ambiguous to a Fault (especially the ending), but it is a Thriller that Keeps You On Your Toes. It Does So with Enough Artistry and Thoughtfulness to Make it One of Those That is Underrated for its Type. It is Haunting, Terrifying, and Disturbing, but Also Touching and Philosophical in Ways that Some of its Contemporaries Are Not. The Ensemble Working This Film Do Everything They Can to Make it a Palatable Picture for Everyone, but it is Just Too Heavy and Demands Thinking and Contemplation. Something Most in the Audience Might Consider Taxing and Exhausting.Recommended for Others that are Willing and Able to Strap-In and be Taken for a Ride, Fully Aware that the Destination is Anything but Predetermined. It's Just Too Good a Film to be Ignored and Can Most Likely be Appreciated by Discerning Audiences. The Film, Once Again, is Not For Everyone but Worth a Watch to See If It's For You Because of the Professionalism Involved and Because it is Wrapped in a Stunning and Sensitive Package.
Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) barely survives his injuries from the 91 Gulf War and suffers from memory problems. A year later, he's drifting through Vermont where he encounters a drunken Jean Price (Kelly Lynch) and her sweet daughter Jackie (Laura Marano). He gets picked up by a Stranger (Brad Renfro) and they get stopped by a cop. The cop ends up dead and Jack is found not guilty by reason of insanity. In the asylum, Dr. Thomas Becker (Kris Kristofferson) puts him in a straitjacket and a morgue drawer where he starts to have visions. Fellow patient Rudy Mackenzie (Daniel Craig) tried to kill his wife. While placed in the jacket, he finds himself in the future talking to a grown up drunken Jackie Price (Keira Knightley). She tells him that Jack Starks is dead found on New Year's Day 1993. Only Dr. Lorenson (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is willing to help. This is an interesting idea but the movie is done without much tension. This could be a dark horror but director John Maybury doesn't have the sensibilities. It's a slow moving movie without many thrills. It struggles for any excitement. The idea is there but the movie lacks too much. This movie may as well put the audience in a straitjacket and put them in a drawer.
This is Jacob's Ladder type of film. Where Jacob's Ladder was a more comprehensive and detailed film. This is a shorter version I guess. Jack Starks probably dies when the small kid shoots him, but before dying or while dying he sees a dream where he visualizes everything that we see in the film. Of course this is my take on the film.We can also say that Ryan Gosling starer "Stay" was also same kind of a film. This is kind of a film that leaves viewers with multiple options regarding how/what the film is. Adrien Brody was good as usual. he's a perfect cast in such kinds of intense films. he seems very natural doing such films. The story of the film is Adrien Brody (Jack Starks)is shown in Iraq war (1991) he gets shot and considered dead. But later on he's seen alive by the crew.Later on the story unfolds and Jack is suspected of a murder, tried and sent to a mental institution. Where he becomes the object of doctors' experiments. He's enclosed in a morgue drawer braced with a jacket. He dreams there and can see future events. If you liked Jacob's ladder,The Machinist, Stay etc. you'd like this film as well.
