I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Absolutely Brilliant!
A brilliant film that helped define a genre
Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
I love WW2 movies. I really like Colin Firth. I'm not entirely a huge fan of Kidman, but she's okay. ( not that I think she acts terrible, but always seems to just over do it, rather. Except in 'The Other's..' she was great in that...) I don't know what it is exactly, but for how terrible the suffering this young man was supposed to endure through his ordeal as a POW, it just almost came across a bit cheesy on this film. Like a Lifetime TV movie. Not that I enjoy watching blood , guts and gore, or the misfortune of others. It's just usually with this type of film, I feel a sense of misery, or anger, or foreboding or SOMETHING with the situation within the story. This film just didn't have that affect on me. I felt nothing, but a bit bored. Right from the beginning. For this type of story, I just felt it was executed poorly. The story itself is good and of course the acting is as good as one would expect from the choices. It just didn't have the WOW factors that make my heart race with trepidation or elation. It will not be a movie that will stick with me. I'm being nice and giving it a 6...
All I can say is that it's a nice historical representation of a time not so long ago. Some of the torture scenes were very well done and quite graphic but the majority of the movie was more timid. My biggest problem with the movie though was that it didn't tear at my heart. My grandma initially told me about this movie and the story surrounding the young men but when she told it I felt the emotion coming from her words. This movie didn't give me the same reaction. Colin Firth and young Eric seemed to be the only ones putting their soul into the performances.Maybe the story was too proper. Or perhaps it needed a little more edge. Unfortunately there are so many sad stories in our history that it's hard not to feel like I've seen this story or at least something like it. A sad story is not enough anymore and personally I wanted and was expecting more.
The world could certainly learn a lesson about the ability of forgiveness following such torment. However, for such rapprochement to take place, both sides must be willing to acknowledge the other. Sadly, this is what is lacking today.Colin Firth gives a powerhouse performance as the despondent man, who survived terrible torture as a prisoner of war of the Japanese during World War 11. He is basically unable to function and he eventually finds out that the man who abused him so is still alive, and therefore he sets out to find him in order to extract revenge. The film almost starts out as a romantic comedy where Firth is smitten by Nicole Kidman and the two wed. We then see how is imprisonment years before affected the Firth character. Kidman does her best here playing the woman who lived him dearly, while realizing that he has to confront his tormentor. The use of flashback is very effectively used here with the constant going back from the war to post-war years.A definitive film of understanding and compassion.
In times of war as well as other times, things are done which some do not consider normal, and in their judgments all is not always right. I must give the actors a lot of credit because they filled the characters most adequately, a look here, a step there, in my opinion they each measured what and how they were going to do it to convey the correct thought, and that is one of the important steps in acting. The story was not only compelling for me, but it rivaled many I have seen unfold, and as the others had done, this one had many turning points.Rent, buy or whatever, this is a very good film, and worth the viewing, although, not quite for the faint of heart.
