I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
The acting in this movie is really good.
A movie based on real life events of a sick boy who claims to have died and gone to heaven. If he was hindu he would have seen vishnu and if he was buddhist he would have seen buddha, but this just happens to be another story about a Christian who see Jesus.Blah blah blah...
As a woman of faith, this movie frustrated me. A pastor who struggles with whether or not heaven is real? Whether Jesus exists? Whether or not his kid really went to heaven when he died on the operating table??? Not much of a pastor then. How can someone as lost as this guy lead a congregation? How can a man of no faith (obviously) stand up and preach about the God of the Bible (although I never saw him crack one open the entire show, not even when he was preaching). It is a terrible premise and it was not at all what I expected from this. Although I should have... Hollywood's interpretation of the Bible and what Christians are like is so off the mark 99% of the time. And so it is with this movie.
I knew what I was getting into by deciding to watch this movie instead of an action-comedy.. and I watched it anyway. It really is a heart-warming, (almost) tear jerker of a movie that has moments in it that make you just want to go "Awwwww". The acting, however, is not top notch, but conveys the story well enough to warrant a second viewing.. I didn't hesitate at all when I was asked to watch this flick a second time. SPOILER ALERT: The little boy in the movie 'visits' heaven and comes back to tell his family all about it. Not all in one go, but in little trickles/tidbits of recollection. His dad, being a pastor, doesn't know what to make of it. His mom's not convinced at first but something fascinating seals the deal with her too. If you, like the community in the movie, are not open-minded, this movie is probably NOT for you! Seriously, give it a pass.. it'll save you from having to rant about your beliefs to the person sitting next to you whose trying to enjoy the movie (presuming that person's open-minded).. Now I obviously don't know if heaven is the way it is described in this movie, but I for one, hope it is! The boy's knowledge cannot be explained by modern day science. It does leave the viewer wondering a) IF everything were actually experienced by the boy, b) if it was related to him from a family member OR c) just included to make his experience even more believable to the reader/viewer. Funny thing about books/movies based on "true storys".. Artistic License still allows for the end result to contain untrue events, for the promotion of the material being created. Nevertheless, I think this is a good option for family movie night!
Or is it Heaven for the Christians? It's tough to sell to everyone just by definition. The concept is or should by familiar to everyone, whether they believe it or not. And the movie does take a few shots at it and the reaction people would obviously have if they were confronted with a "reality" like that. All through the eyes of a child who seems to be saying all the right things at the right moments. Which brings issues into the family and the people close to the family. Acting wise this is really good and there are a few things that are a bit out there (a punching or two, screaming at God and some other things), that you might not expect. But it never gets out of hand completely. It's a movie for those who believe anyway, but has a nice speech by Greg towards the end that can be seen as uplifting.
