To me, this movie is perfection.

a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

Sophie , challenges his rationality while bringing out the romantic side of him without his own awareness. The twists and turns are extremely logical and pleasant to watch as designed by Woody Allen's script and unbelievably delivered by these two great actors. It is almost like a suspense story and we are sucked in right from the beginning to follow the cast and explore together. Emma Stone shines with her charming eyes and smiles while Colin Firth reminds us of a young and babbling Woody Allen. As Sophie, Stanley and even Woody Allen make a living creating illusions, perhaps we are all living in a self-inflicted reality to help us get through life. But what's wrong with it if it enhances our senses, making us appreciate life and be happy? Maybe we do not really need to be so rational all the time. Let our body tell us what is happening (Stanley's tossing around at night). Just go with the flow and enjoy the ride that life throws at us.

I decided to see this movie with low expectations after the initial critiques and hoped that I would still enjoy it since it is Woody Allen and Emma Stone. Unfortunately, this movie is quite boring, nothing particularly funny, nothing particularly touching or romantic, just nice music and sceneries. Performances look a bit fake at times and dialogues get monotonous as well. I cannot understand how a director like Woody Allen, who obviously does not care about some extra bucks, can produce such an uninspiring piece of work. The only good thing about this movie is that at least it is pleasantly and lightly watchable. You can easily watch it while taking your lunch a lazy Sunday noon.

Mediocre.Written and directed by Woody Allen. A magician/illusionist, Stanley (played by Colin Firth), is invited by a fellow magician to travel to the South of France. The reason for the trip is to investigate, and hopefully expose as a fraud, a woman, Sophie (played by Emma Stone), who is apparently psychic. He is fervently of the belief that psychics, clairvoyants etc can't exist - he's a man of science and rationality. Once he meets her, however, things get complicated...Started well. There is the usual Woody Allen lightness, warmth and offbeat humour. However, it is not exactly laugh-a-minute stuff. There is also an air of mystery about the whole thing - how does she know so much about people, could she really be psychic? However, the movie pretty quickly runs out of steam. The mystery disappears quite quickly and there are dull periods. Moreover, the movie becomes a romantic drama, and an overly schmaltzy, contrived and implausible one too. The implausibility is heightened by the age gap between the two characters. Not anywhere near Woody Allen's best.

Magic in the Moonlight (2014): Dir: Woody Allen / Cast: Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Hamish Linklater, Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver: Enchanting drama comedy about appreciating life. It stars Colin Firth as an uptight pompous illusionist, Stanley Crawford who is the best at what he does and can expose every trick of the trade. Central plot regards a spiritualists, Sophie Baker, played by Emma Stone who can apparently detect thoughts of one's past, or speak to the souls of those whom have passed on. Stanley intends to expose her as a fraud but ends up being impressed and bewildered at what she presents. Romantic sparks fly although nothing passionate. He is in denial, using his engagement to a woman that he is not emotionally connected with as an excuse. She is often being trailed by Brice, played by Hamish Linklater, who sings to her in what amounts to an amusing comic appearance. She accepts these actions yet she is drawn to Stanley's detachment. Jacki Weaver plays a woman seeking Sophie's spiritual powers to communicate with her late husband. Marcia Gay Harden plays Sophie's mother who is not impressed with Stanley's uptight attitude upon meeting her daughter. It contains gorgeous photography and jazz music common with Woody Allen films as well as comic dialogue. The conclusion brings great exposure to the whole charade while certain viewers may not appreciate the mockery of Christianity in a brief scene. The result is an intelligent drama comedy about the ridiculous illusions surrounding magic, truths, and the very notion that we often deny our true feelings when exempting our magic from others. Score: 9 / 10
