Highly Overrated But Still Good
A Surprisingly Unforgettable Movie!
A Masterpiece!
If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
This movie is very inspiring. It is a great movie based on a true story and is family friendly for all ages. It promotes hard work and knowledge. I enjoyed this movie and it is a great movie for any aspiring engineers showing what people are capable of if they put their minds to it.
Good.. Emotional and heartwarming... This is what this movie is.The plot here is straightforward but every part of it is filled with hope, passion and the struggle of a group of young boys trying to break out of a coal mining city using their brains and creativity. But it is the simplicity that makes the movie greatYou simply can't not feel for the "Rocket boys" as they are trying to make their dreams come true despite all the odds being stacked against them...A perfect family movie and I am hoping to discover more of those to share them with everyone.
October Sky (1999): Dir: Joe Johnston / Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Laura Dern, Chris Owen, William Lee Scott: True story about the freedom to dream and avoid tradition. Jake Gyllenhaal dreams of going to space and builds miniature rockets. After he and his friends wreck his mother's white picket fence, he turns to the unpopular book worm for help. The rest consists of rocket launching tests to enter the science fair. Filled with stereotypes including the unpopular class nerd, the supportive ill health teacher, the hard nose principal, the popular girl, and Chris Cooper with the dreary role of discouraging father. Director Joe Johnston establishes the 1957 setting with fantastic rocket launching footage but unfortunately he launches a screenplay full of clichés and stereotypes. This is a different type of film for a director known for Jumanji and The Rocketeer. Gyllenhaal basically goes with the flow playing the boy who must prove himself and gain his father's approval. Cooper's role is equally xeroxed as his father. Watching a sitcom father and son is far more interesting than anything these two do in this film. Laura Dern plays the teacher who is ill yet encouraging. Chris Owen completes the stereotypes as the nerd. The film is well made on a technical level but fails on the story front. Theme regards dreams within a screenplay that doesn't fly so high. Score: 5 / 10
On Oct 4th, 1957, the Soviet Union launches Sputnik into orbit raising anxiety throughout the land. Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is 17 living in Coalwood, West Virginia. His commanding father John (Chris Cooper) is the mine supervisor and expects his son to join him even though it's dangerous and the mine faces layoffs. Science teacher Miss Riley (Laura Dern) tries to raise interest in Sputnik but the only kid excited is class nerd Quentin Wilson. After seeing Sputnik in the night sky, Homer decides to build a rocket. With the help of his two friends Roy Lee Cooke and Sherman O'Dell as well as Miss Riley and Quentin, they overcome obstacles to do the unexpected. This is a fine inspirational based-on-true-story movie. The acting is great from everybody. The story is light drama. In the end, the obstacles aren't epic and there are no real surprises. It has a good message and compelling characters. It also has good relationships.
