Slow pace in the most part of the movie.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
John Landis hits a home-run with Coming to America, featuring Eddie Murphy at the height of his powers. He plays the son of an African kingdom ruler(thus heir) who travels to America because he does not want an arranged marriage at home. This is a typical fish out of the water plotline with plenty of laughs and plenty of heart. The actors are all very good especially James Earl Jones as the father. If you in mood of a funny movie- one that is reeking of nostalgia than Coming to America is a film you should consider. In my opinion this is both Landis's and Murphy's best effort.
I love this movie. I think it is definitely one of Eddie Murphy's best films. Eddie Murphy plays Akeem who is the Prince of Zamunda. Him and his friend Semmi travel to USA to look for a queen. The area they travel to is a run down part of Queens. They both start working at McDowells which is a rip off restaurant of McDonald's. There Akeem meets Lisa McDowell who is sweet, caring and smart. What I love about this film is the humor and the characters such as King Jaffe and Mr McDowell. Also the funny concepts such as Soul Glo and of course McDowell's make the film memorable. I think the setting of Queens fit the movie perfect, I don't think if it was set in Los Angeles it would of had the same appeal. So i gave it 10/10 because no matter how many times in watch it I always find it hilarious. If you're looking for a good laugh then I recommended watching this film!
"Coming to America" is a movie made almost entirely of clichés and stereotypes. OK, I will admit the all out absurd extravagance of the first 30 minutes or so of this film did make me laugh, but beyond that it's incredibly predictable, and comedy is only funny when it's unpredictable. Think of a time when you heard the punchline of a joke you already knew and still laughed at it.Never?Exactly.Once Akeem comes to America, the film becomes much less funny for this reason. Let's see, an optimistic man in a culture clash scenario ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding", "Rush Hour", every Sacha Baron Cohen film), check. This one is an easy laugh, that basically comes from "ha ha, he is so ignorant". The only film I have seen this done well in is "Borat" which subverts the idea of laughing at the foreign man for being ignorant and shows us how utterly ignorant some Americans still are. Then of course the culture clash resolution, where both characters realize they are no different after all, regardless of where they're from. Check. Then there's all of the romantic comedy clichés: the simple antagonists (King Jaffe, the father of Akeem, and Cleo McDowell, the father of Lisa. They both have their values skewed, the first valuing tradition over "true love" and the second valuing money over, you guessed it, "true love"; also, Darryl Jenks, the narcissistic boyfriend that doesn't truly care), check; the simple protagonist (Akeem has literally no flaws) and his screwball sidekick who screws everything up (Semmi), check; and finally, the protagonist suddenly having a falling out with the romantic interest which is then resolved in a climactic deus ex machina moment where love prevails against all odds. It's a joke that started with a set up that sounded new, but by the time I was hit with the punchline, I realized I'd heard it all before.
I rate this 11/10 ... why?It is flawless... the storyline is a joke in itself yet so likable! The movie has many fall of your sofa with laughter scenes in it... this is better than many of the highly rated comedies on IMDb... trust me this an excellent movie... well directed... well scripted... well executed...Eddie Murphy is in his prime for this movie... top class acting along with Arsenio Hall whose facial expressions in the movie are perfect for the scenes he is in.This is my favourite Eddie Murphy movie of all time... As a kid I watched this over 20 times... total classic!
