Stylish but barely mediocre overall
This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
I'll start by saying I wasn't offended because of any raunchy or debauched stuff. I am not sensitive at all when it comes to sex humor or any sort of sophomoric low-brow stuff. If it's funny, I like it.That's the problem though: this piece of crap movie simply was NOT FUNNY!!! It's just a stupid, worthless collection of "this is how crazy college guys live" stereotypes, with a truly cringe-worthy love story slapped on top. I don't think there was a single line that I found interesting or unique in any way.Again, I am the last guy to be offended by anything "explicit". But I am offended when formulaic BS crap is passed off as comedy.
this script is so tight and moves along so well. the performances are terrific, especially jason schwartzman. the title doesn't do the movie justice. it should be called scammers or cheaters. its original the way these cheaters use their skills as college cheats as a way to get a girl for a loser.the movie has a cult following amongst hipsters, and generally amongst people who 'get it'. if you're some boring 40 year old living in michigan, its not the movie for you, but if you're under 30 and have a sense of humor, a witty one, and like original movies (unlike American pie etc), rent slackers immediately.
The first time I saw this movie I was a lone female living in a home with two bearded men and a dog named Stella Marie. It was my last year of college and my house was a major "hang-out" house for the male slackers in town. We threw in this DVD one sunny afternoon and didn't know what was about to happen to us. All we knew was, David Schwartzmann, sweet. What then happened was a phenomenon like no other. My roommates, friends and I realized that we were watching a film masterpiece. When the DVD came to an end, we quickly hit play again. During the next week, this movie was watched 15+ times. It was brought to other peoples homes for "movie nights" quickly defeating any other option that was presented. So you may ask yourself, how could someone watch such a low-brow comedy so often in one sitting? This film has so many little nuances that it keeps you going and going. They are absolutely genius! For example, the girl who refers to Cool Ethan as "New Wave Boy" while he's playing a love song on the key-tar. Or how during a pivotal moment in the movie, Segal's character adds, "I think this would be better said outside of the cage".While I absolutely adore this movie, I've got one complaint. And it's kind of a major one, which is why I don't give this movie a 10. The love scenes with our main couple are so incredibly cheesy, they just don't add up with the rest of the film. It's to the point that while my roommates and I watched it 15+ times, we fast forward through those scenes every single time. Maybe the director added it in for the girls, but seriously they are too cheesy for a movie so incredibly hysterical. So do yourself a favor when you are find yourself bored on a sunny afternoon, get Slackers into your DVD or VCR player and sit back with some friends. It'll do you some good.
That's not what this is about at all. This is about a bond three college chums have. And there's this girl in the class.. and there's this kid with the over-obsessive hair doll who blackmails the chums for their help. Then one falls in love, and it's spectacular. And the dumb geeky kid is.. he's just horrible. this movie also has THE Best sex scene ever in a movie. NOt like a typical love sex scene.. the BEST LOVE SCENE. It's one of those remarkable moments in history.. but not your history.. It's locked in film. Then there's the best give up everything for the girl scene. And there's a crowd.. And they're all just beautiful. I heart this movie. I'm stealing it from my sister and putting it w/ the virgin suicides.
