Eraserhead

First time father Henry Spencer tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newly born mutant child. David Lynch arrived on the scene in 1977, almost like a mystical UFO gracing the landscape of LA with its enigmatic radiance. His inaugural work, "Eraserhead" (1977), stood out as a cinematic anomaly, painting a surreal narrative of a young man navigating a dystopian, industrialized America, grappling not only with his tumultuous home life but also contending with an irate girlfriend and a mutant child.

If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

This was one of the worst viewing experiences of my life. Awful and pretentious under the guise of somehow being highbrow art. David Lynch's Uber weird just for the sake of being weird. He has no intention of entertaining the audience so do not watch this film if that's what you are seeking.

I don't quite see the high praise. I appreciate the industrial aesthetic and soundtrack, that part was very well made. Visually, there isn't much else like it. There's quite a bit of surrealist imagery that is used effectively to the themes Lynch was attempting to convey - it certainly makes a world that seems alien, bizarre. However, my main gripe is that the meaning and themes are not very complex or engaging. Surrealist imagery is not inherently brilliant or visionary simply because it succeeds at being strange - at least not in a film, to me. I should mention that practical and visual effects are very well utilized at making grotesque and shocking moments, alongside more subtle humorous ones. Though you've probably already heard at this point that if anything, this movie is strange. The world presented, alongside its characters, all act out of line and out of the norm from our own - and it admittedly is funny to see at times. Despite this, it's a drag for the most part. It was fairly one dimensional in how seemingly the main focus was the protagonist's fear of being a parent, and mostly revolves around that. It almost feels as if the fantastic final scene was written and filmed, before having to arduously attach an entire hour of material to it prior.

My initial reaction?AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHA HAAAAAAAAAAA HAHA!! HAHAHAHA!!!*doubles over, takes deep breath*HAHAHAHAHA HAAAAAAAAAAA HAHA!! HAHAHAHA!!! HAHAHAHAHA HAAAAAAAAAAA HAHA!! HAHAHAHA!!!Okay, I'm fine now. No, honestly. No, I don't need any water. I'm good. Thanks.Oh, God...where do I start with this? Well, let me start with what's good about Eraserhead. The cinematography and imagery is top-notch, beyond hypnotic. I was mesmerized from start to finish with what I saw, even if I had no idea what the hell was going on the entire time, stuff like the plant growing out of Henry's nightstand, the bizarre moment he cuts open the baby's swaddling and it turned out to be holding in its organs, the weird radiator lady...all very fascinating, memorable stuff that just etches into your brain. The movie's imagery was so creative that I'm 100% positive that countless other movies have begged, borrowed and stolen from it without shame. For example, there's no question now in my mind that Ridley Scott saw and incorporated some of Eraserhead into this movie. The scenes with the slimy alien baby are reminiscent of the infamous scene when the alien bursts out of Johm Hurt's chest. Also, everyone is bang on about the sound design. I never pay attention to sound in movies. This was the first one where the ambient noise grabbed me by the eardrums every moment. For example, there's a scene where Henry's girlfriend rubs her eye, and you can actually hear a squishy noise as she does it. There are other memorable sounds, such as the unsettling noise of a mother dog nursing her pups and the baby's haunting cry.Okay, with that being said, there's a huge problem with Eraserhead. It's just being weird for the sake of it. There's no purpose to it, no real reason behind it. It was basically David Lynch saying, "Let me just see how much weirder and grosser I can make this, no matter how incoherent, no matter how alienating." It's this kind of thing that keeps an otherwise inventive, surreal and creative movie from being great. Because there's no story or anything to grab onto, it can have you feeling as if you wasted your time. I didn't feel I wasted my time but I can definitely see how others may have felt that way. Normally, I would've given a movie like this a 1/10 but the artistry, cinematography and sound design more than makes up for the self indulgence and incoherent story so it's a 7/10 from me.

Eraserhead is David lynch's directorial debut. It follows a man named Henry played by jack Nance. Henry is a shy loner, holding down a job at a local printer factory. The film starts by following Henry go about his mundane life. After an awkward dinner at his girlfriends house he's informed that he has a baby. This sounds like a fairly simple story, but that's where the normality ends.Upon learning this news he soon finds out that his baby is a mutant. When you first witness the mutated baby it's something to behold. It's both surreal and incredibly disturbing. Especially in a scene towards the end of the film where you see it fully. The practical effects used, make what I can only describe as a cross between a worm a chicken and E.T. The film is shot on an extremely low budget and what lynch is able to achieve on screen is nothing short of remarkable. This maybe Lynch's debut, but it's definitely a film from his wheelhouse. It is filled to the brink with all his usual motifs. The film opens with a deformed man in a room pulling levers, what's he doing? why Is he doing it? It's up to the viewer to interpret. Watching Eraserhead feels like being stuck in a nihilistic lucid dream. Just when you think you've got a hold of the film, something new comes into play and throws you off.Eraserhead is Lynch at his most surreal, however it's still an accessible film to viewers who aren't familiar with Lynch's films. The film can be taken at face value. It doesn't ask the viewer to answer any questions or decipher it's deeper meanings. Rather it's to viewed as a cinematic experience, one that everybody should at-least try once. It's a beautifully shot film, one that washes over you with it's intoxicating atmosphere. It's a film that can be appreciated on just its visuals alone. However should the viewer decide to delve deeper, into it's meaning and subtext. There are themes of fear, guilt, sin, good and evil, and the contemplation of life, that is an even more rewarding experience to be had. Eraserhead is a film that requires multiple viewings like all of Lynch's films to be truly appreciated. It's a film that is both engaging and rewarding on many different levels.
