The Worst Film Ever

A different way of telling a story
There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.
Robin of Loxley returns to England from Africa only to find that king Richard has been replaced by his unworthy brother, prince John, who taxes his people to starvation. Together with his new friends, he must put an end to this tyranny, regain his family properties and win the heart of the beautiful maid Marian. This movie is a parody to Robin Hood and his adventures. It laughs from one end to another of anything related to the prince of thieves. It follows the original story (sort of) doing nothing more than mocking everything from the characters to the decor or even the plot itself. It's the sort of movie which rarely manages to be funny and entertaining without making a fool of itself. I'm glad to say that it's one of the best in what it tries to do. A true comedy which I watched several times and without any doubt I will see it many times from now on. It puts a smile on your face no matter what mood you're in. Simply wonderful!
Released in 1993, "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" spoofs popular Robin Hood flicks, like "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938) and "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991). Cary Elwes stars in the titular role while Amy Yasbeck is on hand as Marian with Megan Cavanagh as Broomhilde. Richard Lewis and Roger Rees play the villains, Prince John and the Sheriff of Rottingham respectively, with Tracey Ullman as the hideous witch. Robin's merry men include: Dave Chappelle, Eric Allan Kramer, Mark Blankfield and Matthew Porretta.Elwes has that merry persona necessary for the eponymous role. No matter what danger he encounters he always has that jovial smirk on his face. Meanwhile, Yasbeck is stunning and sumptuous, particularly in the chastity belt scene. While there are a few laugh-out-loud jokes, this is mostly a quietly amusing parody and consistently entertaining. I was never bored. Several actors appear in cameos, like Patrick Stewart & Dick Van Patten. Dom DeLuise does a Brando impersonation at one point. The movie runs 104 minutes and was shot in Valencia & Santa Clarita, California, with studio work done in West Hollywood. DIRECTOR: Mel Brooks. WRITERS: Brooks, JD Shapiro & Evan Chandler.GRADE: B
The Robin Hood legend and swashbuckler films in general get the Mel Brooks treatment in Robin Hood: Men In Tights. What that means is that a lot of movie clichés are broadly winked at, conventions are smashed and lots of laughs to be had.Robin Hoods from Douglas Fairbanks to Kevin Costner probably saw lots of potential for a few winks themselves that Cary Elwes saw here. Our Robin here is all that one expects from a hero, brave, loyal, and true, a great fighter and would like to be a great lover if it weren't for that chastity belt that Amy Yasbeck as Maid Marian wears. Way back in those days many a maiden was put in one and I wouldn't be surprised if that was also a gift from King Richard to Errol Flynn for Olivia DeHavilland. Like a true Mel Brooks hero, Elwes is also a bit thick.Kevin Costner's Robin Hood had a black cast member kind of grafted into the film so Brooks goes one better, he has two. A very hip Moor played by Isaac Hayes gifts charge of his son an 'exchange student' to a returning Elwes to England. A rapping Dave Chappelle is a nice addition to the mix.Two of my favorites were Tracey Ullman as a witch and Mel Brooks as Rabbi Tuck. As King Richard himself gives the bride away in the end, all we can do is quote from another classic comedy, "a royal wedding, Mazeltov". It's a Mel Brooks film so you know it will be great.
