Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

This movie may not win awards or having the sizzle of high budget thrillers, but it will bring nostalgia to all of the college alumni about how realistic and truthful this movie is. This movie is not perfect and may push a little too far, but anyone who has been through a trip like this will thoroughly enjoy this movie. :)

Leah (Morgan Saylor) is a cute white college girl living with her roommate in New York City. She gets hit on all the time. She works for Kelly (Justin Bartha) and they have a fling. After meeting Blue (Brian Marc) on the subway, they have sex on the roof of her apartment. She suggests that he can get a better price for his drugs at Kelly's party. Blue gets arrested while trying to make a buy. She needs money to hire defense lawyer George (Chris Noth). It's not surprising that no good would come out of this movie. In fact, a happy ending would have been a great surprising twist. This reminds me a bit of Kids. It has some of the grimy street level energy although the Hollywood stars bring one back to fiction. The story does stray into standard melodrama with her obsessive love but it always injects her raw uncontrolled sexuality. It does play with the edge of the envelop until it stops noticing where the edge is. The most surprising aspect is Bartha playing a douche in this indie. I've never seen him in anything with an edge. This may work better with another actor. The most memorable ends up as the final scene. It's jarring to see her as a college student for the first time.

I enjoyed this film very much. especially the character OF Blue, played by Brian Marc. However I got a very different take on this film than most of the reviewers. Most seem to think a lot of it has to do with white privilege. I disagree. While it's true that Chris Noth, as the lawyer does bring this up, I really see very little of it in real evidence in the film itself. I see the film more as a crime drama about drugs, with a bit of a Westside Story/Romeo and Juliet love story thrown in. At the beginning Leah and her girlfriend Katie share an apartment and are only interested in scoring some drugs to remain high. But a chance meeting with Blue trying to buy drugs from him and his friends changes things. There is an instant attraction of Leah to the handsome Blue. The attraction is mutual, and the pair begin a sexual relationship, that build into a true friendship. This to the chagrin and dismay of both Katie and Blue's friends. Leah may have been self centered and just out for a good time at first, but she risked her own life to save Blue many times in this film. She could have easily walked away when he was arrested, but instead visited him often in prison, tried to appease his drug dealer, and got him a lawyer. She loved him! Those that claim she was privileged need to look at this only from what is shown in the film, not what we see in real life. At the beginning of the Film we find out that Blue's nickname is "Sad" He tells Leah it's because he is sad all the time . He says until he met her. She tells him she left home and came to New York in search of something different. She was not from a wealthy family either. Her life was also sad. Her lack of being arrested had more to do with luck than white privilege. Blue by his own admission was in prison for his third arrest. Leah on the other hand was never caught. When he was arrested at the drug dealer's they were not standing together, she was in the cab. When he was arrested, at the diner she was inside eating, he was outside. For her she was not in the wrong place at the wrong time like Blue was. She stuck by Blue at every juncture, and even convinced his friends to do the same. She was surprised at the end by the marriage proposal, but realized she loved him and would have gone through with it. The only thing tat stopped it was Blue killing the drug dealer. We never see what happens to him after that, but it was clearly self defense. The dealer attacked them first and would have killed both of them. The last scene of the film is why I couldn't give it 10 stars. I found it confusing, and left too many loose ends. We don't see Blue, but Leah is clearly in a classroom. But why, and where? At the beginning of the movie, she was not in school, she was working at a media company, and screwing around with her boss. Is she a high school dropout who went back to school? Or is it a College classroom? Maybe she is taking pre-law and trying to get Blue out? In either case Blue was always trying to get her clean and off drugs. He told her from the start he doesn't do girls that do drugs. I say that seen shows at the least, that she got clean for him, and probably is still with him, fighting for his freedom.

This film is difficult to watch for someone who is not in their teens or early 20's anymore. If you were a wild one at this age, it's not hard to see from the opening lines of the movie where the film is headed. Leah is every parents worst nightmare. Having been a nightmare myself it's very difficult to watch her spiral into the dumpster, continuously crawling back out again. She is that friend everyone is sick of babysitting. She seemingly has no limits or lines she will not cross. For this reason, she is taken advantage of by some of the world's dirtiest scumbags. There is, to my surprise, only one rape scene. (unless you count her disgusting boss) It is not overdone and is exactly what happens to women under the influence every single day. I can feel that the film was directed and written by a woman. If you are a woman who has been in any of these scenarios you will feel as if you were right there with Leah. The drinking paired with the sex, drugs, and alcohol all feel true to life. The rape is accurately and realistically played out. The drug dealer, Blue, tells her early on that he doesn't mess with cocaine yet for the duration of the movie he seems to have no problem with her snorting it all away. That part didn't make sense to me. He stated his boundaries surrounding her interest in drugs, outside of MJ, but then he was seemingly okay with it later. Her boss played by, Justin Bartha, was well done. Although a smaller role Bartha played the part well. He is someone in a position of power who constantly plays on her naivety and addiction. It is incredibly grueling to watch. I wanted to turn the movie off half way into it. I'm glad I didn't. If every drama were pleasant to watch, they wouldn't be true to life. White girl is just that. True to the real world and the unfortunate reality that many of us women face in our lifetime. Some reviewers stated how it seems unrealistic that someone would try so hard to free a man they just met from prison. It is not that far fetched when you look at how impulsive all of her other decisions were leading up to this point in the film. It is not an easy watch but it's definitely worth it. I hope to see more of Wood's work in the future.
