Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

Driven Pulitzer prize-seeking reporter Johnny Barrett (a fine performance by Peter Breck) fakes being unhinged so he can be committed to a mental health hospital in order to investigate a baffling unsolved murder. However, Barrett risks his own sanity in the process of doing this. Writer/director Samuel Fuller uses the gloriously lurid and improbable, yet still gripping story as a means to explore the various ways social pressure can drive a person insane, the fine line that separates madness from sanity, and the bitter price one must pay for ruthlessly pursuing a self-aggrandizing single-minded goal. Moreover, Fuller certainly doesn't skimp on the requisite sleazy thrills: We've got a sizzling striptease cabaret number, a hysterical attack by predatory man-hungry nymphos, and a colorful array of flaky inmates. The enthusiastic cast attack the tabloidy material with considerable gusto: Constance Towers as Barrett's concerned girlfriend Cathy, Gene Evans as the infantile Boden, James Best as delusional farmboy Stuart, Hari Rhodes as the bitter and disillusioned Trent, Larry Tucker as gentle opera-singing giant Pagliacci, Chuck Roberson as friendly orderly Wilkes, and John Matthews as the earnest Dr. L.G. Cristo. The ironic ending packs a devastating punch. Stanley Cortez's sharp black and white cinematography boasts lots of striking stylistic flourishes. An enjoyably delirious marvel.

'Shock Corridor' is pulp master Samuel Fuller at his best form. Like usually in Fuller's better films, 'Shock Corridor' is much more than it looks on the surface. 'Shock Corridor' tells a story about obsessed journalist Johnny Barret (Peter Breck) who, with the help of his girlfriend (Constance Towers) convinces authorities that he's insane and is locked into mental institution to investigate still unsolved murder that took place inside the hospital. This dream (or more like nightmare) like psychological thriller is filled with tense moments mixed with nice surreal scenes, and big portions of irony - Barret is so obsessed in his work that he starts to lose grip with reality. The whole cast does superb job starting with Peter Breck and finishing with chilling performance of Hari Rhodes as black 'white supremacist'.

I find the subject of insane asylums and mental hospitals fascinating. During the 1960s, my mother was hospitalized many times for severe anxiety. At one time she was in a state hospital and received weeks of shock therapy. With that said, here is my opinion of the film. Fuller worked on an extremely small budget and under pressure not to go over the budget. I believe the movie worked, because it was obvious he spent much of his time working with his actors, ensuring their characters were as real as possible. The intensity of the film gave way to an energetic tension. The acting was marvelous, except for one actress: Constance Towers: her acting was embarrassingly melodramatic. The scene where she sang and performed was too long. The extra time could have been used in the hospital scenes. I found the characters believable, but not much of the situation. Some of the patients were calm, others very excitable, and others prone to violence. The film did show patients receiving medication, but not enough to keep them calm. Where were the attendants when needed. Would they really allow the patients to interact without supervision?? Why no intercom system? And the nymphos allowed to attack a man severely? Why weren't they being watched? Do nymphos really act that way? I doubt it!Suffice to say, it is definitely worth watching

When I say this is the world's worst movie, I mean that "Shock Corridor" makes "Plan 9 from Outer Space" look like "Citizen Kane".A reporter wants to go undercover in a mental hospital to find out about a murder so he enlists the aid of his girlfriend who is a stripper. She does the world's worst strip tease, starting with singing thru a feather boa wrapped completely around her face so that she looks like Oscar the Grouch, and then bumps and grinds out of sync to a slow love ballad. She goes to the police station and says, "My brother tried to attack me" and the desk sergeant immediately picks up the phone to call the mental ward to have them come and get him and that's all there is to it.The reporter gets committed as promised and gets asked titillating questions by the admitting doctor while the "sister" sits in the waiting room, and later the doctors even allow this "sister" to come and visit him regularly and they hug and kiss each other, even though the man is there due to an allegation of incest.Peter Breck, as the reporter/patient, starts questioning three of the inmates who supposedly witnessed this murder, trying to find out if they know who the killer is. One of the inmate/witnesses is a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who went crazy from working with nuclear fusion, another is a black man who hates ni--er-lovers, and the other is a soldier who defected to "The Commies" because his parents never taught him the good things about America. Ooooh-kay.Each has a short period of lucidity where they espouse political and social commentary, accompanied by a from-out-of-nowhere travelogue "in color". What these commentaries have to do with the murder is beyond me, and the reporter even looks bored at one point, having to listen to them. The reporter himself is now starting to show signs of mental illness, allegedly from hanging around all the other loonies, which the doctor tells him must have first manifested during his "poo-berty". We can tell when he's going crazy because each time he has a psychotic episode he starts screaming like a girl. The best scene in the whole movie -- and by best I mean the world's worst, outlandishly, hysterically, over-the-top ridiculous -- is when he walks into a room by mistake and sees several women who are eying him. "Nymphos!" They circle him like Dracula's Children of the Night and attack him and he starts screaming like a girl again, and ends up with places on his face where they have actually bitten through his skin! You gotta be kidding me.In the end the reporter discovers who the killer is, beats a confession out of him, and demands that the chief doctor call his editor, who will confirm that he was "a plant" in the hospital ... and in the very next scene he has become a "catatonic schizophrenic", but we are never told why or how. Did he catch schizophrenia from one of the other inmates? Did the doctor do something to him to keep him quiet? Who knows? Who cares? I cannot for the life of me understand how this film could be considered a classic of any sort, yet there sat Robert Osborne on the TCM couch, spouting all kinds of praise for the director and his cinematic vision. I must be missing something somewhere.Trust me, you'll watch this movie to the end like I did, because it's so bad you won't be able to take your eyes off it, but this is the epitome of MST3K material.
