Excellent but underrated film
I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
Woody Harrelson as Wilson manages to make himself extraordinarily unlikable in this film. And since he's on screen 95% of the time, an essential component would be to engage the viewer with him emotionally. That didn't happen for me. There was no backstory apart from a father who might have been abusive. Wilson had unexplained funds at his disposal and a demeanor of obnoxiousness which was off putting, i.e. when engaging in a conversation with a helpful prostitute asks in an aside for a blowjob and then announces he has no wallet. Yes, I gather he was on the autism spectrum but he had no trouble picking up women and the scenes with his daughter did not ring true. 4 out of ten.
A close view to people they try manage their unbearable lives. An interesting scenario with turns and Woody as always great, simple and to the point. Good playing of the cast. When everything is lost, always there is something, even fake, that gives meaning to our lives. A good film makes you search deeper. Not for under 15.
The movie didn't make much sense to me. Maybe after a second watch i would understand it better. That makes the movie unwatchable. My friend gave it a 5.8 had some laughs, maybe he is older and understands the human relationships more.2/10 from me and 5.8 from him.
My wife and I watched this at home on BluRay, picture and sound are great, "extras" are minimal.I like Woody Harrelson as an actor, but many of his roles are for unlikable characters. I had hoped his role as the protagonist, Wilson, would be a favorable one. It isn't.As it starts out we see Wilson is bright but socially awkward, whether it is among relatives, friends, or strangers he has a knack for saying the wrong thing. He smiles, he seems oblivious to how he comes across.Add to that his dirty mouth, while a bit of foul language can be appropriate, adding a spice to the character, listening to him is like trying to eat a steak with way too much pepper on it. You soon lose track of the character and just cringe at his foul language. Add to that as the story moves along several other characters, including his ex-wife and his long-lost 17-yr-old daughter, are scripted with extremely filthy language. This could have been a good movie, the characters could have been developed without so much emphasis on filthy language. But lazy script writers rely on this trick, it is an attempt to mask their lazy writing.
