Sorry, this movie sucks
Good movie but grossly overrated
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
The Package is an enjoyable conspiratorial cold war thriller. I was extremely excited to watch when I discovered Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones were in it as I rate them both very highly. Hackman was excellent - thoroughly believable and accomplished. I thought Tommy Lee Jones was actually pretty unremarkable in this - perhaps because the nature of his character required some discretion for dramatic purposes. I always enjoy a standout performance from someone I haven't seen much or any of before. This time around it was Dennis Franz. I thought he was excellent and brought the movie back to life when it was starting to tire. Expect some twists and turns and also expect a few almost laughable moments that weren't needed. But overall it is a decent thriller with a couple of great performances notching it up a level from bang average. One criticism would also be the pace. I felt it lag a couple of times and almost lost interest - but the pieces came together eventually and it managed to reach its dramatic conclusion.
Gene Hackman is seasoned Green Beret sergeant Johnny Gallagher, is escorting a prisoner, Airborne Ranger Tommy Lee Jones back to the US, but he subsequently evades Hackman's custody and escapes. All is not what it seems as the plot thickens when it appears that Jones is an assassin who is out to kill the President and visiting Russian Premier who is negotiating peace talks in Chicago. John Heard is a devious general who is out to thwart the treaty. Hackman is accompanied by 'Blade Runners' Joanna Cassidy who plays his ex-wife, Dennis Franz also assists Hackman in his race against time.Directed by Andrew Davis 'The Fugitive' 'Under Siege' it is a riveting and excellently Suspense filled Conspiracy cover up fans of Gene Hackmans will enjoy this, their are references to 'The French Connection' most notably in the car chase.
Well, yet another conspiracy movie. Gene Hackman is a sergeant who must escort a court-marshalled soldier (Tommy Lee-Jones) back to the US from Germany. Jones escapes however and Hackman races against time to prevent an assassination blah blah blah. I'm a great fan of both Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee-Jones and their acting in this movie does not disappoint. What does disappoint is the script. It has the most clichéd ending in Hollywood movies and it grated my cheese beyond belief! Why are Hollywood scriptwriters and directors so afraid of letting the bad guy win once in a while; especially when the bad guy is as likable as Tommy Lee-Jones! You can't cast a lovable actor like him as the villain, have the audience rooting for him and then kill him. It's why I loved Secret Window so much because the bad guy WON. The Jackal is another example where I wanted Bruce Willis to win yet, alas, he didn't.Overall, the clichéd ending is the only reason I give it 4/10. The acting is good and up until the end, the story was intriguing to a degree. It's a good watch and if you enjoy a happy ending, you won't be disappointed, if like me you are tired of the usual last-minute-good-guy-victory, give it a miss, chances are you've seen a movie the same as this one but with different actors.
I watched The Package Last night and was mildly entertained by it. Hackman was his usual best and Tommy Lee Jones was very entertaining though he was not given enough screen time. The director seemed more amused by Russian eye brows. That being said I would like to take issue with comments that it was outdated. It was not outdated for its time. That would be like saying MUNICH was outdated because it happened over thirty years ago.Get with it. If the story took place today ... yes it would be outdated. It didn't. It obviously took place in the mid to late 80s before the wall came down.Good pedestrian film.
