The Last Unicorn
From a riddle-speaking butterfly, a unicorn learns that she is supposedly the last of her kind, all the others having been herded away by the Red Bull. The unicorn sets out to discover the truth behind the butterfly's words. She is eventually joined on her quest by Schmendrick, a second-rate magician, and Molly Grue, a now middle-aged woman who dreamed all her life of seeing a unicorn. Their journey leads them far from home, all the way to the castle of King Haggard.

Sick Product of a Sick System
Redundant and unnecessary.
Brilliant and touching
The acting in this movie is really good.
I do not suppose there is a great need for me to review the content on the movie in great detail for I am sure many others have done a much better job. I will review the spiritual aspect of the movie.I first watched this movie as a small child at a friends house, they are rich and had a giant screen with a good projector. It was always a joy to watch movies there. This cartoon happened to be one.The people who owned the giant screen are fanatical Christians, Pharasees if you will. I am surprised they let us young vulnerable children watch this spiritually corrupt movie. The Unicorn obviously represent a spirit or a Demon. That is made clear from the begging, a good spirit of course which would naturally make us wander if this movie had Islamic notions. The wizard is no more than a natural man who is in touch with a witch who uses black magick through deception, much like in this modern day. This type of Magic uses fallen angels which is why I am surprised the people who let me watch this, let me watch it. Black magick is a sin worthy of death and is documented in the law of Moses. How ever, the Harpy has its way with her. Eventually the natural man does conjure up spirits, at this point he has become a black magician, he has replaced the witch. This movie is more than likely new age and is certainly made to entertain the younger minds darkly. There is a sin in the bible called the unforgivable sin and the magician in this movie commits it. When he turns the water into wine, he does it through deception and wickedness. That is what they accuses Jesus of doing and hence it is the sin that can not be forgiven. Again this is not a good thing for Christians to show to infants. The skeleton is clearly a deceased person who desires to return to sin.The king is obviously Satan and so is the red bull. The rest of the unicorns that are in the sea represent possessed humans. The sea often represents mankind in the bible. Not so pretty now is it...how ever, the idea that the unicorns are set free is a concept of demonic liberation which again is Islamic. This is the idea that Jinn can be saved. As a complete piece, this movie is no better than your modern Disney movies for they all represent some kind of witch craft. So this is the true meaning of the last unicorn.
A lone unicorn learns from two huntsmen passing through her forest that she may be the last of her kind in existence. Unsure of what to think she asks a passing butterfly what he knows of the fate of her species. When the butterfly backs up what the huntsmen said by telling her that long ago all of the unicorns were hunted down by a red bull and now held captive in a faraway location, this prompts the unicorn to leave her forest in search of answers. In the outside world, only those that believe in unicorns can see her for what she truly is. Those who don't, see only a white horse.Pretty soon she is captured by a witch called Mommy Fortuna and held captive in her travelling carnival. Even though Mommy Fortuna can see the unicorn in her true form, she gives her a false horn. In fact, all but one other creature in the carnival, a harpy, is an ordinary animal with a spell cast upon them so that non-believers can buy into the illusion.Whilst captive, the unicorn meets Schmendrick, a magician who wants to be a real wizard. He too, can see the unicorn in her true form and agrees to help set her free. Once free, the unicorn sets the harpy loose, which then kills Mommy Fortuna and her other assistant leaving Schmendrick free to accompany the unicorn along her journey. In a conversation with the unicorn before her death, Mommy Fortuna alluded to the red bull being a minion of an old king named King Haggard so spurred on by her words, they head in the direction of King Haggard's castle.Along the way they meet a band of travellers, one of whom is a jaded, weary, middle aged woman called Molly Grue, who decides to leave her life behind and join Schmendrick in his bid to help the unicorn. As they approach the castle, the red bull appears and tries to force the unicorn into the sea. In an attempt to save her life Schmendrick casts a spell on her, inadvertently changing her into a human. They re-name her 'Amalthea' and continue onward to Haggard's castle. At first Haggard is unimpressed with his unexpected visitors and only lets them stay because he isn't fooled by Amalthea's outward appearance, though they are on borrowed time because the longer Amalthea stays a human on the outside, the more human she becomes on the inside. And to complicate things further, Haggard's son Prince Lir takes a romantic interest in Amalthea who rebuffs him at first, but slowly starts to return his feelings the more human she becomes. This animated adaptation of Peter S. Beagle's novel of the same name captures the wistful, melancholy tone of the book, perfectly. The music, sang and composed by America, while not to everyone's taste, also adds to this tone wonderfully.
In 1982 I was 10 and saw this movie when it first came out and I still recall how enchanting this film is. It's a beautifully mesmerizing animation and story. I love unicorns - and I think this movie is one of the reasons I still love the magical mythological creature. This is one of those films that is great for watching with your kids.If you enjoyed this movie then I would recommend to you the following films that are sorta similar to this film and you may enjoy: "The Secret of NIMH", "The Black Cauldron" and "The Hobbit (TV Movie 1977)".They do not make films like these anymore. These old classic drama animations are some of the best you will ever see.9/10
I first heard of this film 10 years ago when I read a review of it in my favourite preteen/teenage magazine Mizz at the time. Upon looking at the Release Dates here on IMDb, I saw that it wasn't released in cinemas in the UK, just on DVD and perhaps video as well. I watched this film for the first time today whilst renting it from LoveFilm and it completely enchanted me.The backgrounds are detailed, even though some of them consist of simple colour schemes such as shades of pink and purple and shades of green while a lot of the human characters' faces were straightforwardly designed with basic lip-sync. Some of their features are more detailed such as their hair and their hands. The most intricately-designed characters are Mommy Fortuna and Amalthea, who is beautiful whether a unicorn or a human. As for the animation, it was consistent for the most part but was flickery at times and slow in the black and white flashback of several unicorns. On a more positive note, the animation style was unique compared to other works of animation I've seen even though it looked a bit Anime- like to begin with. Other positive aspects of this film include the funny Butterfly character (despite him only appearing for a few minutes), the well-known voice cast; the dialogue that was dark, moving and funny in parts; and the soundtrack consisting of tense, poignant and whimsical background music. The best songs in the film are 'The Last Unicorn' and 'Now That I'm A Woman.'To sum up, this is a beautifully-made and underrated film that I have never seen as a child and was well worth the watch. 8/10.
