Sorry, this movie sucks
Sick Product of a Sick System
This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
This film tells the story of an absentee father who returns home to his two sons, Andrei and Ivan. The three of them go on a road trip and along the way their father attempts to make up for the last twelve years, but is unsuccessful. As their trip continues Andrei and Ivan also grow further apart as Andrei idolizes their father while Ivan distrusts him. When they reach their final destination tensions rise and, inadvertently, Ivan causes his father to fall to his death. Andrei and Ivan are then left to deal with their father's body. This film is an interesting take on a coming of age story as it deals with some of the same themes featured in this genre, like relationships with parents and rebellion, however the film addresses these themes in a much darker way. The struggle that Ivan has with accepting his father as an authority figure in his life and the subsequent change in his relationship with Andrei is the main conflict in the film. From this conflict we see how Ivan changes because of it and comes back to the same situation that we found him in at the beginning of the film. The brothers' relationship with their father also has a significant impact on them. Andrei wants a relationship with their father and obeys his orders while Ivan rejects their father in every way that he can. Only at the end of the film is Ivan able to accept the presence of his father when he shouts and runs into the water as his father's body sinks with the boat that it is on.
The two sons handle this situation very differently after not seeing their father for 12 years. . The older son, Andrei is happy to have his father back and wants to do everything to please him while the younger son, Ivan, has a resentment towards his father. The first half hour of the film, I couldn't say I particularly liked the movie. Ivan was starting to really annoy me with all his sass and I didn't see much of a point to the movie. As I watched more of it, I started liking it more. The complexity of the relationships started seeming more realistic in this kind of a situation. In the beginning, I hated the way the father treated his kids, but in the end, I realized why he had been doing what he was doing, he wanted to teach his sons what he couldn't in the past 12 years. And eventually the sons realized this and it became a much clearer picture. Once I finished this movie, I actually enjoyed it very much. I went from annoyed to guilty and sad, and the characters made you feel like you were there.
The main idea of this film is to emphasize the great love of a father toward his children. Unlike common logic of depicting a conscious and gentle character, this father is always shown his cruel actions and impatience towards his children. However, scenes demonstrating the responsibility of his is also constantly shown throughout the film, especially the extreme action he took in the end, creating a pessimistic ending, to show his great care for his children. The theme of the father's affection is highlighted this way, and I think this is the uniqueness of this film. However, though I personally do believe this contrast achieved its desired effect, I strongly doubt the logic of this theme. This movie is persuading its audience that one is a good father as long as he is concerned about his kids regardless of how he treats them.I think we need to analyze what makes a good father in the perspective of the benefit of children. Although the intentions of his actions are good, by no means can we deny that he had always making his children feel insecure and stood in a bad mood. A good father should have the ability to control his emotions regardless of what he has been through and provide a good environment for their children's development. In fact, I feel pretty fortunate that he has been away from them for 12 years. If he lived with them for this long period of time, the children's characteristics could be deeply affected by him and become cruel and violent as he is after they grow up. I think almost all fathers love their children, but the difference is what kind of person the child turns into after he or she grows up
This film is about two boys who meets their father for the first time in twelve years, as their father arrives home unannounced."The Return" explores the relationship between the father and their two boys, who haven't met in twelve years. The pace is slow, but it is engaging because of the dynamics between the characters. The father arrives home and then goes onto a trip with their children, much to the mystery of the boys and also the viewers. The mysterious circumstances continue, creating suspense as viewers hope for closure. The characters and the dynamics between them are interesting as well. The younger son, Ivan stands out because he is the strong willed and bossy one. His emotions take a U-turn at the end, yet it is only briefly portrayed on the screen. The director might have left the emotions unsaid, as a picture is worth more than a thousand words. Still, I would have liked a bit more screen time for the younger son and the viewers to feel the emotions.
