Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

Perhaps, I was too snooty when I saw this the first time. I was in that era when I was starting to take film study seriously. On first viewing, I was turned off by all the low-brow jokes and felt the oncoming creep of a movie calendar built around blockbusters at the expense of story. I similarly felt angry that another film that year, Troy, watered down the mythology so that we wouldn't be distracted from the main draw of watching Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, and Brad Pitt while shirtless. Similarly, I originally thought "How Dare They Shortchange Jules Vernes' story! This is a blatant attempt to showcase this B-level actor's martial arts." How silly I was to think of Jackie Chan's martial arts as something of a sideshow. I still feel like Jackie Chan could up his game as an actor during the scenes where he's not fighting, but the elaborate staging and acrobatics is fully realized art.The film is kid-friendly and an adult will need to see it on those terms to fully enjoy the film. If you can do that, you'll find the film to be a little exaggerated in its acting, but ultimately sweet, adventurous and a decent homage to the original (with the addition of more karate kicks).

Lau Xing (Jackie Chan) steals the Jade Buddha from the Bank of England and escapes from the police. He finds shelter with inventor Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan) taking the name Passepartout. Lord Kelvin (Jim Broadbent) demands the Buddha's return from General Fang before supporting her in China. Kelvin laughs at Phileas and his ideas in the Royal Academy of Science. They bet Phileas traveling around the world in 80 days. Kelvin hires bumbling inspector Fix (Ewen Bremner) to stop them and then orders their arrest. In Paris, Moonique La Roche (Cécile De France) joins them.I don't like the addition of the Chinese story although the fight in Paris is great fun. It distracts from the basic story which is the adventure of traveling the world. The movie diminishes the drama of the ticking clock. The best moment in the story is when they think they lost the race at the finish line. This movie makes it an after-thought. Lots of the movie makes no sense time wise although logic is not a necessity. Coogan and Chan could have chemistry but their characters take a long time to connect. I don't know who Cécile De France is but she was OK. Arnold Schwarzenegger's performance is horrible and he puts the movie on a downward trend that it never recovers from.

I would have to admit that there are many Jackie Chan films better than this one as such movies showcase better humor and more truthful plots. However, I also would have to admit my real appreciation for this film because we do not measure the beauty of the film based from the past movies. And if I am going to vote for the movie without comparing it with other Jackie Chan films, it was really really good. (That makes me wonder why this is the biggest flop independent film in movie industry) The cinematography of this movie is one of the best that I have ever seen, my whole life. It really suits my taste, and I never got bored because the camera rolling in every scene was unique to the others. We do not say that making war outside the earth is a goof, but why do we keep on criticizing that such infrastructure or landmark was not yet constructed in 1872 when in fact both movies are fictional? I really do not care about the errors in geography and in characters because this is a fictional movie. The action scenes were perfectly done. It was very fluid and seems to be realistic. Well, I guess, it's a talent from the producers to create such scenes as smoothly as possible.I just do not like the 3D effect in hopping between countries because of the special effects that are too childish. It is a caprice -- from action/comedy to fantasy. Besides, fantasy wasn't listed as a genre of the movie. The ending twists was not that critical, and yet appeared to be good. I liked it. However, there were many elements left behind. And like in other movies, the question "What happened to the...?" baffled me.Around the World in 80 Days got 8 points. :)

My husband had ordered the DVD of this film for both of us thinking we'd both have some good laughs by watching it. Well, I don't quite know where to begin. This movie is so bad and so unfunny as to be almost painful to watch. We usually thoroughly enjoy Jackie Chan movies and he did try but given what he had to work with even he couldn't salvage this disaster. I suspect he's embarrassed by how bad this movie actually is. Some movies that are bad are actually so bad that they become funny. Sadly this thing wasn't even bad enough to be funny the way Atomic Twister managed to become funny. There was another bad movie that I saw on TV a few years ago - I have forgotten the title - that had lava flowing out the door of a garage only after the door was opened, as if the garage beside a house in NYC could contain an 8 foot deep mound of molten lava, that movie was so bad it was funny! I have only once before given up on a movie part way through but at what I assume was about half way through the India part if this trip around the world I turned it off. I kept hoping this movie would get better but it didn't. If anything it got worse as it went on. The gags that were supposed to be funny were dragged on and on and on and since they started out bad the longer they went on the worse they got. If you're thinking about buying this DVD, don't bother.
