Nice effects though.
It is a performances centric movie
Absolutely Fantastic
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Alex and Nancy move into their lovely new house full of hope, regardless of the old lady living upstairs. They soon realize that their life is starting to fall apart so they must try to find various solutions to "evacuate" the unwelcome tenant before they lose their minds. Unbeknownst to them, their neighbor is pretty determined to keep her residence, so they'll have to work hard to achieve their goal.I like the whole idea of this movie and thanks to some good acting, a lot of very funny situations come to life. Unfortunately it's a bit too "forced" and very unlikely, kind of the worst that could happen. The ending isn't groundbreaking to say the least, unexpected but stupid at the same time. It's a good movie if you're looking for a laugh, otherwise it's nothing special.
This starts out as a very standard Hollywood comedy, but I quite like how it gradually gets more sinister. Though the murder plans are all handled in a rather quirky way, it's still somewhat intriguing to see the unbearably nice people from the beginning of the movie eventually turn into cold-blooded killers. Especially the casting of the inherently cute Drew Barrymore contributes a lot to that plot element. The actual jokes mostly consist of pedestrian situational comedy (Ben Stiller clumsily breaking into an apartment and always staying at the verge of being caught, that sort of thing), but it's all pretty well-acted so it still makes me laugh. The movie really stands out near its ending though, which is just very well-written and unexpected. It caught me off-guard a little, it's kind of an unpredictable factor in an otherwise rather predictable yet funny film. Quite worth seeing.
Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore make such a good looking couple in "Duplex".Danny Devito also directs the film and adds so much humor and energy into the film that will have you laughing on your sides. My friend gave me 2 choices between watching this movie and "The Hot Chick".He told me that "The Hot Chick" was really funny but he also told me that "Duplex" was also really funny. So I told him "Duplex" and I have to say that I was quite surprised at how funny and entertaining this movie was.The performances by Stiller and Barrymore were simply wonderful and I'm glad that Mr. Devito chose these 2 brilliant actors and put them in such delightful roles. There's also Eilleen Essell's performance, who plays the elderly person who ruins Stiller's and Barrymore's lives when they movie into a big house and have to share it with her.Although she did actually do some things to the couple that actually got me mad, I really thought that she was just a sweet person who obviously needed a lot of help around her house.I also need to mention that I think that this film is very underrated. How can something like this get a 5.7? It's not brilliant, but it's definitely not bad by any standards. As I always say, just watch the movie and just enjoy it for what it is.You actually may be surprised like I was.
this film is hilarious. Sure, there are comedy mechanisms at work here...........DER! IT'S A COMEDY! the surehanded direction is seamless and uninvasive and the cast perform realistically which serves to make the humour more effective. I laughed aloud all through the movie, genuinely. Stiller is a comedy master and Drew Barrymore revealed herself to be one also. This is a film made and played by masters at the peak of their game and a total entertainment.........I think this is what movies are for. One can intellectualise in a Godardian manner about the purpose of 'Le' Cinema.....but for the most of us, we pay for our seat and are thoroughly entertained and amused........isn't that why we leave the house on a Friday night to go to the Mall? I rate this movie. It sits well with 'Throw Momma From The Train' and, to some extent, The Ladykillers. More of this type of film please. The importance of the therapy of laughter is not to be underestimated and the balance between 'black' or dark humour and light-hearted slapstick is achieved to perfection. We need the exorcism of hatred through comedy to make the break between our daily weekday worklives and the week-end. With this movie we get it all. Great moments? well, the sexy nurse making eye contact with Mr Stiller - whilst adjusting his manhood beneath the covers - accompanied by Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing' is hilarious.
