Simply A Masterpiece
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
I have fond memories of watching this version and Jackson's version as a kid. Watching it today reminds me that it's still pretty good. The animation is really well done and the voice acting is great too! I have to give props to the great John Hurt (yes, he's in this movie!) and Christopher Guard. Hurt voices Aragorn, son of Arathorn and Guard voices Frodo Baggins of the Shire. If you like Lord of the Rings, you'll enjoy this adaptation, trust me!
This film tells the tale of Frodo Baggins, a Hobbit, who must go on an epic quest to take the evil ring of power to Mount Doom in the Kingdom of Mordor; all the time under threat of attack by the nine sinister Ring Wraths and evil Orcs. He starts his journey after being given the quest by the wizard Gandalf and is initially accompanied by fellow Hobbits Sam, Merry and Pippin. They are later joined by Aragorn, a friend of Gandalf. He leads then to the elvish town of Rivendell where they are reunited with Gandalf. Here the 'Fellowship of the Ring' is formed as Gandalf, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf and Boromir, a human warrior join the four Hobbits and Aragorn. Their troubles are only beginning; the forces of darkness are constantly after the ring and the ring itself threatens to tear the group apart as members think they could use it for good; something which is quite impossible. It must be said that since Peter Jackson's epic three film adaption of 'The Lord of the Rings' this version looks a distinct second best. That isn't to say this isn't worth watching. I certainly enjoyed it when I saw it as a child even if I was disappointed by the ending that makes it clear that this is just the first part of the story I was even more disappointed when it became apparent that the conclusion wouldn't be made. On the positive side the story moves at a cracking pace and I liked the character designs. Some might not like the obvious rotoscoping used during more action led scenes and scenes involving large groups but I rather liked it as it gave the film a distinctive look and meant we could get for more motion in these scenes than if it was conventionally animated. The voice cast does a good job, never sounding 'cartoony'. Overall I'd recommend this but one has to accept that it only shows half of the story at least now we can watch Peter Jackson's films to find out how it ends.
I love Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings! It open JRR Tolkien for me,who I love very, very much! Most people who hate this film did not grow up in 70's with little Tolkien except these Great Things! The Hildebrandt Brothers great Artwork, and The HOBBIT 1977 TV Movie and the Led Zepplins great song! Because of Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings I started to collect animated Cels! I have a great Cel of Frodo looking through the Ring offering it to Galadriel! I also have animation art from Disney ,Hanna-Barbara,and Heavy Metal Cels (Taarna, Barbarien Leader Cels) I have over 200 cels! People who hate this film must hate Tolkien and the fine art of Animation! This is 23 years BEFORE Peter Jackson Version ,which he used this as some guidance! Like my N.C. Licence Plate FRODOLIV!!!!!
what i admire is how close to the book was being just two hour long, the scenes from the book are adapted very well using the most important lines from the novel and holding true to the story's atmosphere (in a childish way but very true to the novel. But yes, it is very flawed i am not going to lie, sometimes it feels rushed, but just few times, and the character are sometimes over the top (again, only few times)some characters are misrepresented, but only in appearance because their personalities are similar to those of Tolkien's writing (except Sam, Sam's character was horribly done)examples are: Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli (But to be fair that was the standard dwarf of those times), Elrond, Saruman (again not for being with a color, but being only red, in the book, he transformed into Saruman of many colors, but here it looks like Saruman the red), between others. other problem is the ending, the movie's ending is the end of half of the story, this was meant to be two movies, but because of the box office failure the sequel was never Greenlighted (saddly) and the movie is only book and a half, leaving many loose ends.but to the positive part, the movie keeps you entertained and it holds up well to tell such a big story as lord of the rings.with the bad motion capture animation i have no problem because it takes you to great battle sequences.if you compare it to Peter Jackson's epic trilogy, Jackson's version wins, but this movie doesn't fall shorter having a good opponent to the epic trilogy. In conclusion, this movie is well passed, suspenseful, exciting, and even epic in it's own way.
