The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
If you were too go and rank the top ten best movie/television portrayals of Batman, Kevin Conroy's portrayal would probably be in the top five. He voiced batman in Batman: The Animated Series which was a cartoon that ran from 1992 to 1994. He also continues to voice Batman in various animated movies such as Batman: Mask of the Phantasm- which is often considered the best animated Batman movie of all time. And after watching it, I think I could probably agree with that opinion. I recently made a list of 300 movies I have to watch before I'm nineteen and this is the first movie I had to watch in the Animated section. First off, Batman; Mask of the Phantasm had a really good and intelligent story that had a really good final twist and also nicely retold Batman's origin story. It also explored some new narrative ground, introduced a cool new villain named Phantasm, explored Bruce's psychological issues, and had a great romantic subplot as well. The voice acting was on par, featuring both Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill at their finest voicing The Caped Crusader and The Clown Prince of Crime. The characters were believable. Bruce Wayne dealt with some very human issues and felt very human (unlike Val Kilmer's portrayal of him in the Batman movie that came next), Andrea felt very human too. And I like how the movie examined and developed their relationship throughout the film. And Phantasm was scary, Joker was psychotic, Arthur was charming- the characters acted like they were supposed too.The action sequences were decent through electrifying, with plenty of exciting fights and chase sequences scattered throughout. The movie also paints a dark, somber, gritty, and mature depiction of Gotham that the popular 60's live-action TV series never showed. The movie's visuals, exciting final sequence, and moral are also very good too. And you would probably be surprised but I found nothing bad at all with this movie. Final Consensus: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is probably the best animated Batman movie of all times featuring an interesting and mature story, good voice acting, good character development, electrifying action sequences, a gritty tone, decent visuals, great final sequence, and a good moral. It is nearly flawless, in my opinion. Due to frequent moderate violence and consistent moderately frightening scenes, this movie is recommended for kids 9+.
This is an hour and 15 minute episode of batman the animated series with a little more punch than the t.v episodes,if you watched the show on t.v when you were a kid you remembered the hype.you saw the box at your local video rental store. I'm pretty sure I never watched this as a kid. if I did and forgot. or was not able to follow it because the story wasn't keeping my attention then really not much has changed of course I take note of more detail as an adult.this movie is not bad.but its not pined in my memory bank I cant really remember much to even give a really detailed review. I guess that's not good.but if your a fan of the franchise I say of course watch it. lets like it.its batman the animated series from the 90's.ok so the title the cover mask of the phantasm.great title great poster.but it looks like to me that the main villain in this movie is the joker who is not on the poster or in the title.the phantom guy who isn't a guy is this batman teams production version of a batman villain called the reaper.I cant remember anybody in this movie calling the main new character of this movie by any name you find out that its bruce waynes love interest that he tries to marry.I watched a batman episode in season 4 with a new character called the judge and I'm getting my memory confused with that and this movie because its similar. anyway its lie the title of this review if your a batman fan from the 90's show watch it so you can say that you've seen it.5 stars
Here was a "cartoon" that was written for adults. It could be viewed by older kids, but it had great depths for the adults who took any time with it. Each episode (or couple of episodes) acts as its own mini-movie. The structuring of the story in each one is just so well executed. As well, the animation (for its time) was quite good, and still holds up well enough today. Another difference from other animation, is that the color palette is quite dark- which, again, only makes it more interesting. All of the great villains are here (and others you may not have heard of), but they get a very serious and, at times, philosophical explication. One of my favorite things about the series, is that every episode has its own orchestral score- meaning, the music that you hear is tailored to fit the exact moment you are watching. Shirley Walker manages to come up with so many sub-themes and variations on the main theme- and works them in so well with the happenings on screen. For those of you that have seen the series and remember it fondly, you might be interested to know that a box-set of the first 28 episodes was recently released- you can get it just about anywhere.
I sat down with high expectations for this movie and, on that front I was completely disappointed. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was merely a mediocre movie. I'd like to start off positive by saying the effort put into this movie was incredible. To see TV quality animation in a movie is rare. I guess what I'm saying is that visually, this movie is great. I also loved the darker tone and the violence. The voice acting was stellar. Those are the greatest aspects of this movie and, they keep it from hitting rock bottom. One of my main issues with the movie is it feels like a single stretched out episode of the TV show. It feels like 22 minutes laced with flashbacks to give context to the seen your watching. In this way Mask of the Phantasm feels longer than it is. The problem with this movie feeling to long is that it's only 76 minutes long. This is a major stilted pacing issue of Mask of the Phantasm. As for the final twist at the end of the movie it was nothing but predictable. Giving the Joker a locked down backstory in this canon is something I view rather neutrally. As I view most of the movie. The movie is at best very slightly above average if only for the dark tone. That's about the most I can say without spoiling the movie but, if you have a brain and, can remember things for a period of longer than 24 hours than you'll be able to be 40 minute ahead of this movie at all times.
