Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

The trailer is what drew me to this movie and I can say I made no mistake in giving it a try. The photography is sublime. Every scene was both simple in details and poignant in nature. It was very peaceful and easy on the eye. The main cast was solid but though not a fan of Casey Affleck's voice, I must admit it suited his character very well this time. The score carried the movie almost more than the actors at times. Daniel Hart's song "Ruth and Sylvie" was mesmerizing. All along the movie I felt the soundtrack showed a strong presence but never detracts the viewer by being excessive.I won't say much about the story because the trailer gives away too much to my liking. I would recommend this one as long as you keep in mind the movie pacing is quite slower than depicted in the trailer.

My wife and I watched this at home via Netflix streaming. It is set primarily in Texas but filmed mainly in the areas around Shreveport, Louisiana. It is about a young couple in love, with many similarities to Bonnie and Clyde. Based on the suitcase of money we see much later it is evident that some bank heists must have been involved. The couple are cornered at an old house and there is a shoot out, an officer is killed. With no outside witnesses that the girlfriend actually did the shooting, then the boyfriend takes responsibility and ends up in prison. Just about the time that his girlfriend is pregnant. It was only a matter of time before he managed to escape and head back home to be with her and to meet his young daughter. So most of the movie is the hunt for him, and their attempts to escape to a place far away with the suitcase of money to start a new life. The characters are played well by Rooney Mara as Ruth Guthrie and Ben's younger brother, Casey Affleck as Bob Muldoon. Interesting and mostly entertaining, but will not go down as one of my favorites.

In years past, sometimes I'd feel like going to a movie without caring which one. When you're that spontaneous, you might end up at a movie you know nothing about, except maybe that it has an interesting title. Sometimes that works out and sometimes it doesn't. When I went to see "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" (R, 1:36)… it didn't.Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara star as Bob and Ruth, a pair of star-crossed lovers who get into a shoot-out with police in rural 1970s Texas. The reason for the gun play is never explained, but when Ruth shoots a cop in the shoulder, Bob takes the rap and goes to prison. He promises to get out and come back for Ruth and the baby girl that she has while Bob is paying his debt to society. After four years, he escapes and begins to make his way back to his young family.Keith Carradine plays Skeritt, an old family friend who looks after Ruth and her daughter, Sylvie. Ben Foster plays the cop that Ruth shot, and seems to want to take Bob's place in the family's humble digs. If this all sounds stupid, it's not – just boring. There's a lot of talking and not much action. Monotone is the best word I have to describe the acting, especially from Casey Affleck, who played a similar character (and slightly better) in 2007's "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford", but is much more entertaining playing quirky characters as he did in the "Ocean's" films. The most interesting thing about "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" is the movie's title – even though it doesn't ever mean anything in the story. This film is all about tone and feeling, but the feelings are barely there. The tone reminds me of 2007's Best Picture Oscar winner "No Country for Old Men", but in that film, the characters were interesting and something actually happened. This movie would be better titled "Ain't Them Movies Supposed to Have a Point". I still like to be spontaneous, but not with movies. Not after this waste-of-an-interesting-title. "D"

Ain't Them Bodies Saints is a surrealist painting about love and what one will do to find love, and that includes breaking out of prison and avoiding the authorities. Now this film is not for everyone's taste, but I was enthralled by the film. Not only was the story captivating, the visuals were excellent. And I'm not talking about explosions and CGI. I'm talking about the cinematography and the excellent country shots. This is one of those westerns nobody has ever seen, and it is our jobs to make sure that this great movie is seen.David Lowery's film is about a Texas outlaw couple in the 1970's. After a shootout, Bob Muldoon is sentenced to 25 years in prison. Bob suddenly decides to escape prison to reunite with his wife, Ruth Guthrie and his daughter that he has never met.The acting is excellent. Casey Affleck is in another western after 2007's Robert Ford film, but I think he does better in this film. It's more suitable for his persona. Rooney Mara does an excellent job and she perfectly compliments Affleck. Ben Foster delivers a fine, toned-down performance. Finally, Keith Carradine does a good job as an actual homage to the 70's.Overall, Ain't Them Bodies Saints is a poetic masterpiece that is led by strong acting and mesmerizing visuals. The plot is a little conventional, but it is one of those plots I can enjoy over and over again. It's a shame how the film couldn't even break a million dollars at the box office, because in my opinion this film should have had a couple Academy Awards to its name. But I guess the film is an acquired taste. I rate this film 9/10.
