It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...

This movie started out with much promise. I love supernatural thrillers based on esoteric themes like time travel, fate, the foretelling of the future, changing the course of the future etc, so this was right up my alley. It is actually rare for a plot synopsis to intrigue me this much, so I was very excited to watch this movie. The first 30 minutes hooked me in. I was at the edge of my seat in suspense, wondering how the plot would play out. A woman wakes up to find out her husband has been killed in a car accident, spends the day overwhelmed with grief, and then wakes up the following morning to find her husband is alive. This is a superb start to a movie. They could have taken it in so many different directions from here. But instead, the movie just gets worse with each passing minute. As others have mentioned, if the take home message of the movie is that fate is predetermined and we are powerless to change it, why did Bullock have the premonitions in the first place? Also, what was the point of the premonitions when Bullock made no attempt to change the course of events (including preventing her daughter from getting permanently disfigured) and of course her husband's death until the end when it was too late? You would think she would at least set an alarm for god's sake so she wakes up early enough to warn her husband before he leaves for work. She did not bother setting an alarm once.On that note, she never actually told her husband of her premonitions, which was really frustrating. He could have avoided taking that route (220) for example. All she said was that she had a dream he had died. Well a dream is a bit different to waking up to different realities every day where her husband is alive one day and dead the next, and surely this is important information she should have disclosed to her husband. I thought it was rather distasteful that when she found out he hadn't actually had an affair yet but was PLANNING to, she decided she wanted to just let him die! How horrendous! You would think a normal person would confront their spouse about it and ask them not to cheat on them, instead of letting them die as some kind of punishment. As for the other characters, Bullock's mother was horrible. Committing your own daughter after she loses her husband, and separating your grandchildren from their mother after they have just lost their father is unconscionable. Bullock's so called best friend didn't help either, as she is the one who carried her children away as she was restrained and taken to a mental asylum. You would think that your own mother and best friend, two people who are supposed to know you rather well would be a bit more understanding of someone who has lost their spouse and is grieving, and perhaps acting a bit "out of sorts", and also understanding of that fact that children have accidents and not immediately assume that a mother is responsible for cutting up her own daughter's face! It's never explained why the husband goes in the morning of his car accident to triple his life insurance either. How does he know? Is he having premonitions too? As for the ending, it is the worst. It defeats the entire purpose of the movie because the husband dies anyway, even when Bullock finally tries to save him at the last possible moment. Again, setting an alarm and warning him the morning of the accident would have been helpful. But of course that's too easy. Instead she tells him to turn around in a way that causes his car to stall in the middle of a highway. And then when a truck is coming up behind him, instead of getting out of the car and running, he keeps trying to start his car. Ridiculous. After his tragic death which apparently could have been avoided had Bullock refrained from intervening (Is this supposed to be ironic?) Bullock wakes up months later pregnant with a third child that she will now have to raise on her own. Overall, a complete disappointment of a movie with an utterly unsatisfying conclusion.

Sandra Bullock gives a standout performance as housewife Linda Hanson experiencing extreme paranormal behavior. But the plot of "Premonition" includes holes that are larger than the semi that figures so prominently in the story. The film title is misleading, as Linda is not merely having a premonition. Rather, she is moving in and out of time during the week in which her husband died in a tragic auto collision with a truck. As Linda moves backward and forward in time, she pieces together the story about her husband's affair with an office worker, then desperately tries to save his life before the wreck. The problem with this scenario is that on the one hand, Linda is successful in going back in time in changing the past in her forgiveness of her husband. But the screenplay is so convoluted that it is difficult to take away any message about the meaning of this strange experience. The ending seemed smug in attempting to tack on a theme about "faith" and "miracles." In the end, "Premonition" never achieved the potential of the film's premise. The final stretch of the narrative needed to synthesize all of the critical plot elements (the electrical storm, the dead crow, the child's accident, the meeting with the psychiatrist, the encounter with the "other woman"at the funeral). Instead, those aspects of the frantic week of Linda Hanson that were inconvenient for the uplifting ending, were left dangling or were simply ignored.

Honestly, I don't know when the last time when a movie like this actually paid off was. They never do, even the ones that manage to satisfy my taste are loaded with plot holes and inconsistencies. I mean, if Bruce Willis was dead all the time, how come he didn't know it? Surely, he has tried to talk to other people, not only the ones he was shown talking to - how come he didn't notice they didn't see or hear him at all? Of course, 'The Sixth Sense' does manage to overcome this, being an excellent thriller. Plus, I saw it in my early teens, when such a twist was actually surprising. When I saw 'Premonition', I was thirty, and, well, 'Premonition' is not 'The Sixth Sense'. Don't get me wrong, it is not a complete failure... Or, is it? Sandra Bullock is, of course, great. She always is. The movie is visually satisfying and, as a whole, well acted. But that is it. The plot is just not there. Seriously, this thing didn't make any sense. It didn't have inner logic of its own, it was simply confusing for the sake of being confusing. At the same time, I could foresee the ending before one third of the movie had passed - because I have seen, read and heard this story a thousand times already - the story of the self fulfilling prophecy. She tries to save her husband and by doing so she ends up killing him. That is all there is, and the fact that days are jumbled up doesn't change anything. Seriously, what was that about? We were never given a proper explanation about the reasons her week was inconsequential. That was just... there. At the same time, there are some glaring mistakes that I will not waste your time with. I will only mention a life threatening event that was supposed to have happened on Tuesday did not affect Thursday in any way. My guess is that the director and the writers didn't actually know what they were doing. Then there is this "if you don't have faith you will suffer" speech from the priest, which left me scratching my head - when exactly did Sandra Bullock's character lose her faith? Faith was never even mentioned before that scene...Sorry.

Bollock is a stand out in this psychological thriller that focuses on her characters life. One day she is told her husband has passed away......the next day she awakes to find he's alive. Then he's gone again. She is confused and depressed and her friends and family are convinced she's insane. She starts to wonder about her own state of mind and just does such a true and strong depiction acting out this character. Her confusion and fear, the scene when she is swirling it all through her mind in the middle of a street.....brought back to reality by the cars horn. Good stuff. Although this is an older film It is one worth seeing. It will hold your interest and you'll want to see again.
