The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
Well I did like the movie. Not specially for the acting or the writing but because I'm a convinced atheist. And watching movies that ridicule religions is just mind kinda soup. Everybody is entitled to have his beliefs, and I have no problems with that, but some (or many) are just too extreme and should just keep their mouth shut about it and just be retarded by themselves. In Red State you get the extreme religious Christians, with their hate towards everything that does not represent their stupid book. You would think it's all fiction but sadly there are tons of retards thinking like that. The world would be better off without all those lunatics. The movie will not be remembered for it's great acting or story, but it will amuse people like me, that's for sure.
I was blown away by this movie. I hadn't heard of it until the other day, when I found myself scrolling through some lame Top 10 Films Tarantino Wishes He Could Have Directed or something equally as click-bait-y. But Tarantino did comment on this film in particular, highly favourably--and a film doesn't get a better recommendation than that, really. So I had a certain amount of expectation, but it was surpassed. I am a bit of a film addict, so when I say this movie blew me away, I mean it. I'm not going to bother blurbing the film or anything because that is 80% of the other reviews already, but for those of you interested in a random bloke's 2p, this film felt real to me. The acting never felt like acting and I was placed right in the middle of the conflict, literally jumping from moment to moment. John Goodman is ALWAYS a good guy to have in a film, but all of the others really held their own too. I think it would be easy to pass the film off as perhaps being a bit "confused" or "garbled" but those descriptions only go as far as describing how much of the film some viewers were able to individually take from it or maybe their Online- University-Major-In-Film-Critiquing egos that tell them all films have to follow a basic formula of arch and character development... Whatever. Regardless, I thought the film was an unforgettable thriller with snappy writing, a terrific script, memorable performances and a truly engrossing and amusing balance of poignant reality, overwhelming brutality, and powerful dialogue--with a delightful element of humour and not-taking-itself-too-seriously. It is immediately up there with some of my favourite thrillers and is therefore obviously recommended. ...I had no intention or writing a review but it was that good.
I don't understand why this movie doesn't have a higher ranking. I saw this movie without even knowing it was written and directed by Kevin Smith. When mentioning to one of my friends that i had seen probably the best horror movie since "Silence of The Lambs", they had informed me that it was Kevin Smiths attempt at a horror flick. Seriously though, the preacher plays one of the most believable characters I have ever seen in a movie, let alone a horror-ish movie. I am a tough critic with movies in general and this is definitely in my top 10.ITS AN ORIGINAL MOVIE FOR CHRISTS SAKE! Every year recycled dumb plots hit movie theaters, and the horror genre is the absolute worst. "Split 2017" has a higher rating than this movie, seriously wtf? It's laughable.Overall.... Plot: A+ Acting: B+ - A (Preacher is one of the best ever.) Cinematography: A (its a very unique style) If you haven't seen this yet and you are somehow reading this review. Just watch the movie.
This film has severe credibility problems. In fact, I would rather believe everything that happens in a previous Kevin Smith outing, "Dogma". Here, the naturalistic style sets demands for a credible plot, and these demands are not met. The antics of the three youngsters are barely believable, the church services even less so - and the actions of the authorities definitely not.Apart from credibility, it gets quite depressing. Everyone you supported gets shot, and the characters most deserving to get killed survive. In a normal film, Jared and Cheyenne would survive and fall in love - that would have been predictable, but more entertaining than this gloomfest. The ending is a complete failure. Apparently the money ran out and the filmmakers were forced to improvise a cheap interrogation scene to tie the loose ends.On the positive side, Michael Parks is excellent as the patriarch of the cult - exactly as they are in real life. The other actors are all good too, it is a pity that the script lets them down.
