It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...

Movie's director plays much too much with viewers suggesting illogical events or matters just in order to get them lost. Besides, the main character's reactions can be seen as too caricatural and even unbelievable. The end opens up other dimensions in the understanding of the story which, once again, is merely another trick to make people think about a movie which is simply irrelevant most of the times. Sorry to say it, but suiciding because of a childhood trauma, although having built one's own life and being a father, is at the minimum extremely depressing and absurd if not completely impossible in reality.

In the pantheon of cinema there are an endless number of films that can be labeled "masterpieces" in some context. But only a select few of these films are as engrossingly perplexing as Cache. The setup is quite simple, an upper class educated French family begins to receive video tapes in the mail. The tapes are wrapped in plastic bags and accompanied by disturbing childish drawings. The tapes themselves are even more perplexing, they're long stationary distant shots of the couples home. Most perplexing of all, there's no way the shots could have been obtained without the couples knowledge, as at several points they should have noticed the large bulky camera. To reveal much more would ruin the suspense that unfolds, but secrets are revealed, actions take on a new context, and things get complicated. This is a film which has been dissected endlessly by cinephiles and critics alike, pouring over the film scene by scene, frame by frame, attempting to decipher an enigma. Every new piece of information only broadens the films scope, and inspires more questions than it answers. Rarely have I ever felt as much of an urge to rewatch something. The credit is all Michael Hanekes, every shot has been perfectly conceived, timed, and choreographed to hold the audiences attention and to hit them with maximum impact. This film is designed to frustrate and perplex, but in my there are big themes woven into it. As for answers, I think that will be up to the viewer to make heads or tails of. This is definitely a film which begs to be seen multiple times. Overall I'd call this a definitive Masterpiece, truly one of the greatest thrillers ever made.

Haneke's Caché, viewed at Valladolid, 2006:Haneke's "Caché" is a handsomely filmed puzzle with no clear -- or even unclear -- answer at the end, but the work of two of France's finest actors, Daniel-Auteuil and Juliet Binoche, makes the trip to nowhere more or less tolerable. The couple Auteuil-Binoche, quite well- off haute bourgeois media people, are being spied upon and start getting strange videos from whoever the spier is -- which we will never find out for sure--- and the mounting paranoia starts putting a heavy strain on their seemingly perfect marriage --on and on -- until the plot gets so convoluted that only a mother could love it, and there is no resolution in sight. This is a picture that is all style and actor driven, but as Gertrude Stein said about Oakland, "There isn't any 'there' there". In any case, intense Daniel Auteuil is the Gallic answer to Al Pacino, and Binoche is always a pleasure to watch, even when she's suffering. Not for every taste, but there's some class in there somewhere. The official jury statement proffered to explain their weird dual selection of two highly obscure films: "In these two films the jury acknowledges the artistic maturity of two European filmmakers with very individualistic career trajectories"-- WELL, la-dee-da, et moi non plus...

Brilliant.............a film director make an ass of film critics and film goers alike. Cache is a prank on the public but directed specifically forward film critics and their liberal easily taken in followers. Google "art critics fooled by fakes" or "art critics fooled by kindergartners" and read the many hilarious accounts of these supposed "Art" critics making asses of themselves. These are the same people that think blood and feces smeared on a canvas is art. This movie is like a long boring joke with no punch line. Michael Haneke is the Yoko Ono of the film world. No one likes being drawn in to a movie that drags on and on but still holds your attention just enough to make you want to get paid off for your almost two hour investment only to be given a sleeping pill at the end. I say 'end' because the 2nd set of credits roll but there is no ending here. Let some of these reviewers here explain it all to you and you will get dizzy with their moronic explanations about what a great director and movie this is. One critic wrote: ("Brassau paints with powerful strokes, but also with clear determination. His brush strokes twist with furious fastidiousness. Pierre is an artist who performs with the delicacy of a ballet dancer.") That critique was written by a well known supposed art critic whom later found he was critiquing the work of a 31-year-old female chimp. The same ilk rave about this overrated waste of time. How many movies in IMDb have ratings like this one? Either '7' to '10' stars or '1' star ('0' if it was allowable and it should be) I could find no other except guess who? Yes, all of this genius's movies are the same and I for one will make sure he never gets a second of my time with any more of his garbage. There is nothing to compare this movie to (except possibly his other movies, I for one will never know) in an attempt to get across to you what an utterly pretentious waste of time this movie is. One last thing, Michael, you are not a movie director, you are a TV show director. You could have made this entire movie in 20 minutes rather than drag it out for almost two hours, spare your fans next time. I agree with other reviewers that this guy is just plain boring.
