Truly Dreadful Film
Really Surprised!
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Grease Live premiered on fox on Jan 21st 2016. I pretty much just think of it as a remake when I watch it. The film has no actors that are too recognizable. The film is about a girl who moves from Utah to a high school who just left her boyfriend little does she know that hes in the same school and they fall in love. This film is too me,boring and very sad. I loved the original and this was just teen crap. Jessie J though did do the grease song really good but apart from that, this film is very disappointing. This was badder than the rocky horror picture show play which was also very very very bad. Grease Live to me is crap that tries to remake a good classic;failing.
I was a teenager in the late 1950s and the early 1960s, so many things in the Grease movie or this stage presentation bring back good memories. Like the drive-in movie theaters on weekends ("who watches the movie?") or the student dances. Not to mention all the 1950s attire for the school kids. All very authentic. However the gangs and street racing are a bit exaggerated. Still it makes for good entertainment.Following the lead of NBC which started yearly live televised productions with "Sound of Music" then a couple of others in subsequent years, this is a live TV presentation on the studio back lot and large sound stages. Not only do they not try to hide this, the presentation both opens and closes with production numbers highlighting the use of back lot and sound stage. All in all it works very well and is very entertaining. They make good use of well-known TV and teen movie personalities and pop singers, and it helps that they are good singers. Julianne Hough is no Olivia Newton-John but she is vocally well-suited to the role of Sandy. Aaron Tveit is a more accomplished singer than Travolta was at that age and is good as Danny Zuko. My favorite is Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, showing that she is not only a pretty face but put a lot of sass in the role and vocally is outstanding. We all know the story, Sandy and Danny meet over the summer before senior year, Danny is a real sweet person but when they meet up at the same school he starts to be the tough guy to impress his friends. The story arc is to see how they will end up together at the end.I watched it as a replay, without commercials, on Netflix streaming.
Grease is a classic with so many iconic scenes, songs and characters it would actually be hard to blotch it. What sets Grease Live! apart from the original is the energy - actors are playing it live and everyone's super pumped up. It feels like you're watching a great stage play, not a movie. With pacing a little faster than in the original movie and the general High School Musical vibe, Grease Live! can also appeal to audiences that no longer appreciate the original. While all the actors play their parts well, the biggest kudos go to the crew: the camera work is wonderful. Even with the stage energy, the cameras will have you believe it's a movie like any other.
I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a really nicely done musical. The performances are solid and the logistics must have been beyond the pale. The scene changes are outstanding. Compared to others of these live TV productions, this is far superior. The singing is really strong with an occasional dropout, but that's to be expected. One thing that I kept thinking is that Aaron Tveit looked kind of old to be Danny. I checked and apparently he's thirty-three. Of course, that is a challenge they had to face. As demanding as this musical is and the fact that so much professionalism is required, there aren't many true teenagers who could hold up under the pressure. If John Travolta goofed up, he could do it over again sixteen times. Grease has grown on me over the years and it was really fun to hear the songs again.
