That was an excellent one.
So much average
Simply Perfect
At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Anyone remember the old TV comedy Bewitched? This mess up has the same name and the same basic concept, but it is used as a vehicle for (this will make you laugh. Not) Will Ferrell! Yes, the story is not about a witch in the real world but about Will Ferrell failing to be funny. In fact the entire movie was not remotely amusing. I am not a big Nicole Kidman fan; she appears to have just one facial expression and uses it at every opportunity. This film might explain that expression - sort of confused incomprehension - since a role that maybe her agent (and the rest of us) thought would be the lead was torn away and the emphasis instead given to Ferrell (I can only think that he has some blackmail material on somebody important) to promote what should be a background character to be the lead. Want to know how bad this was - imagine a film being made of Breaking Bad with the lead role being taken by another teacher who never actually appeared in the original series.Dreadful.
Thinking he can overshadow an unknown actress in the part, an egocentric actor (Will F.) unknowingly gets a witch (Nicole Kidman) cast in an upcoming television remake of the classic show "Bewitched." The film earned Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Screen Couple. The film was also nominated for Worst Director, Worst Actor (Will Ferrell), Worst Screenplay, and Worst Remake or Sequel. The New York Times called the film "an unmitigated disaster".I give them credit for one thing. Rather than just do a remake, you made a movie about making a remake. That is is a bit more clever, and someone deserves recognition for that saving grace. But Will F seems out of place and never lands the jokes as well as he should. Nicole Kidman is good, but a part like this is really beneath her. How such a talented actress ended up both here and in the "Stepford Wives" remake is a real mystery.
This movie was fairly well cast with the notable exception of Will Ferrell as Darrin. Frankly, he was terrible in the role - not at all like Darrin Stephens (either of them).Shirley MacLaine and Michael Cain were made true victims by Will Ferrel's poor performance. It's as if Will Ferrel had never watched a single episode of the show and had only bothered to memorize his lines, rather than make any attempt to understand the character he was portraying.Steve Carell deserves accolades for his performance as Uncle Arthur. But, Shirley MacLaine deserves best supporting actress in this movie for nailing Endora. She could have been just as good as Agnes Moorehead in the original show. Nicole Kidman's performance was less than memorable - and, I imagine she would prefer we forget it, too.The script and plot left much to be desired. I did not care for the film maker's approach to this movie at all. Will Ferrel made this movie a one-timer for me. I will never watch it, again. The fans and the original show were both short-changed by this half-hearted and largely incompetent attempt.
Bewitched is a very mediocre movie with a promising storyline and a great cast that sadly both failed to be as good as they could have been.Firstly,I don't think this movie should have been about making a remake of Bewitched,it should have just simply been a movie reboot of the well known series Ferrell and Kidman would have done a much better job,I think personally, playing Samantha and Darrin rather than greedy actors that are playing them, also we wouldn't have to have constant jokes about the film industry, they clearly thought they were being clever and self aware but after a while it just got annoying.A lot of people complained about the lack of chemistry between Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman, but I honestly thought they worked quite well together and though I will admit they did not appear to be in love, they looked liked they enjoyed working together.Steve Carell's cameo was my favourite part of the whole movie,he was only beginning to make it big when this came out,but this brief appearance showed that he is a genuinely funny man, this scene and the obvious friendship between him and Ferrell was the only part that had me in stitches. It has some good moments, but honestly Bewitched is not a great or memorable comedy and I would only recommend it to you if it's ever on television and there is nothing else to watch. A real life witch trying to live a non-magical life is cast as Samantha in a TV remake of Bewitched.Best Performance: Steve Carell Worst Performance: Kristen Chenoweth
