Absolutely the worst movie.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Oliver Twist (2005): Dir: Roman Polanski / Cast: Barney Clark, Ben Kingsley, Jamie Foreman, Harry Eden, Leanne Rowe: Another reworking of the Charles Dickens story about an orphan on the run from neglect and abuse. Twist uses survival instincts to escape from a cruel household yet falls within the realm of child thieves headed by an elderly man bent on using him for the same purpose. When he is housed by upper class gentleman who sees beyond the surface Twist finally discovers what love and acceptance is all about. Directed by Roman Polanski in similar fashion to his earlier film The Pianist, also about someone searching for refuge. Barney Clark brings intelligence and charm to the role of Twist who endures brutal hardship but ultimately learns the value of friendship and trust. Ben Kingsley as the youthful gang leader steals the film in his promise of success and delivery of broken trust. Jamie Foreman steals scenes as the villain Sikes whose acts of cruelty knows no boundaries yet consequence ultimately surface. Harry Eden plays the resourceful Artful Dodger. Leanne Rowe plays a young prostitute named Nancy who is in an abusive relationship. Despite its many translations, Polanski succeeds greatly here. Early century beautifully realized with a world that relates in stunning affect to the opening drawing or painting that opens and closes the film. Score: 10 / 10
When you have read classic novel like Oliver Twist in your childhood , the excitement pumps up in your vein to watch the movie which is directed by none other Roman Polanski. Oliver Twist delivers and delivers very well.Based on classic novel by Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist describes the story of an orphan who lands up in bad company of a cruel and cunning , Fagin( played brilliantly by Ben Kingsley) where he learns to steal for living. From the director of Chinatown , The Pianist and The Ghostwriter to name few , Roman Polanski brings you another classic movie which will be remembered for its stupendous director , excellent cinematography and wonderful art direction. The director succeeds in describing each character with humor and appropriate details like their accent ( mostly British as it was set in London), personality. Polanski will take you to the fascinating world of old London with charm of its own and you will feel like reading the actual novel. The screenplay tends to loose in the later reel though. Ben Kingsley steals the show with his fantastic portrayal of selfish Fagin. Rest of the star cast did justice to their part.Overall , Oliver Twist stays true its content as in the novel. Very Good 4/5
There's a lot of hate going around saying it's not as good as the book, but really, movies never are! Having never read the book, I have no idea how the story was supposed to go, but I had seen Oliver and Company. I was very confused by this movie. From the start, it was very difficult to tell Olivier apart from the other boys when he was in the orphanage. Well, until he recited the famous line of asking for seconds, which it was Gruel, it probably only cost them $2 to feed the entire orphanage! So many questions came up over the course on the movie. Why he didn't just stay with that nice old woman he met on his way to London. It was obvious she wouldn't have minded him staying. Of course if he had not gone to London, it would have been a very dull movie. For that matter, why were those thieves so hell-bent on keeping Oliver? I much preferred the motivation in Oliver and Company, where they were innocently trying to rescue him. Moreover, why use Oliver to break into that rich man's house? Another more experienced boy would have been much better suited for the job. It's a very confusing movie.
I've seen several versions of this Dickens classic, and this is the best. Dickens first wrote "Oliver Twist" as a serial for the newspaper. That's why there were so many side plots--Oliver's unwed mother, the two cousins in the country, Mr. Bumble and his wife, the lost locket etc.None of the side plots are really necessary to the core of this story, which shows good and evil unvarnished. The boy who played Oliver was simply marvelous. This film had the best Bill Sykes--evil and unredeemable. The squalor in which these people lived is portrayed very well.I totally loved this version.
