Just perfect...
Good concept, poorly executed.
Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
This film has a decent enough premise, but never quite lives up to its potential.Don't get me wrong, it has it's moments, but the problem with any film with a crazy but quirky female lead is that they run the risk of being annoying. And that's the case here.I think while this film will never rank as one of the best films ever made, it's a decent enough romantic comedy, with some funny and charming moments.Unfortunately the slower, sillier parts stopped me enjoying it fully.
It seems most people care that this is a remake of another film and that that film is different. I don't. This movie works on its own terms. Now those terms might seem familiar. There are many tropes from romantic comedies on display here. But there is more than enough reality to the story, and more than enough genuine energy between the leads, to lift it much above its simple lines. The concept of free-wheeling, crazy, confident girl is a trope, I suppose. But I believed in this one. That probably has something to do with the acting. And a lot to do with depictions of real and negative things (like her almost insane alcohol abuse and dependence (not to say this is an intense portrayal of an alcoholic-but it gives the character a necessary and convincing edge). There are also other 'real things' going on in her life, which involve more in depth plotting. (But are delivered in a DIFFERENT, not worse way, than the original). Ultimately, she is also selfish and mean and that made her convincing too. Again, these match tropes, but I'm arguing that that doesn't matter here. The POV is from the guy, which is a little different, and the guy is also well-rounded and interesting. And his backstory and character is an entirely convincing reason for them not to get together immediately, which is clearly what they both want to do. I won't spoil the ending, but there is much to genuinely convince that this won't actually happen. I would have been content with either ending, and was more than content with the ending I got, entirely convincing, and because of the 'scratch-under-the-obvious' surface layer of the simple, tropey plot.Everything about this movie for me made it entirely convincing. In that sense, I don't need to see another romantic comedy again, because when the tropes happen here, I see them with new eyes and in an entirely satisfying way.
I am going to try and keep this short this time around, and tell you exactly why you should steer clear of the remake of a far better movie or why you should see it just to know why....HOWEVER if you haven't seen the original movie and are thinking that you should see the remake please don't because all you will see is a very common American flick, that a flick that doesn't have much substance. My Sassy Girl is a remake of the original Korean movie which is named the same. My Sassy Girl from 2001 was an amazing love story weird and sweet at the same time. And you could argue that the original didn't make much sense, that's also why most people saw it more then once. You were meant to look upon it numerous of times to see what the story had to offer, and every time you saw it again more details would be clear to the viewer. It was a massive success in Korea and across the eastern world, it was amazing because it was a love story that wasn't fabricated from someone's mind, it was a love story based on real events. My Sassy Girl from 2008 is Hollywood wanting to get some extra money from a success that they really shouldn't have been able to earn anything from. My Sassy Girl from 2008 didn't have any substance it felt weak and the introduction of a friend to the main character just felt wrong. One of the main issues I had with the movie was the fact that in the end the main characters kiss. I get it but look at the original and see where they went wrong.I don't want to say more, I was trying to get my two cents out, see the original and then maybe see the remake, you will most likely not get the American version while the Korean version should draw you in from the very first minutes. The American version never does this.
Sorry all you korean movie lovers, but I just watched it to see if it's sooooo good compared to this lovely American version. What's so special about the acting in the korean version? Sorry, but I don't get it. I don't seem to be worthy of watching good movies, because I refuse to compare every apple to the one I ate yesterday....I simply can't stand this kind of Asian acting and the actors themselves appear as sexy or attractive to me like a car accident. No to the korean version. This one's better for me.The NewYork Sassy Girl movie was one of the best of its kind right behind movies like Serendipity. But maybe you have to have found true love to appreciate what the actors really did for us on screen.Watch it! It's simply a beautiful and funny movie....
